kopi luwak coffee

Has anyone tried kopi luwak coffee and if so how was it? A friend of mine just gave me some and I have not tried it yet. I was also wondering if this would be a good coffee for a blind tasting or if it would be better to let my friends know the orgin of the coffee?

I have tried it in a cupping session with Peter Wolff of Veveziano Cafe in Brisbane A couple of months later while I was helping another forum member and reviewing a home roaster for a reseller While there I was offered some beans and asked to evaluate them as a blind test   I picked the taste straight away as Kopi Luwak from my previous but recent cupping experience Turns out this fellow is the site owner of Animal Coffee & a distributor of Kopi Luwak I don't dislike the taste of Kopi Luwak however I have found that at least for my pallet, that I have had lot of nicer coffees and blends KK

Well put KK. You know, I live and roast coffee in indonesia and have access to a boundless supply of KL from all over the place. Many people grill me about why I do not retail the stuff. To be honest- what you get can be a really mixed bag. The animal is first and foremost an omnivore. It can exist on a diest of fruit (meaning and including coffee cherries) but is not limited to eating only vege product. Consequently the Kopi can drink "gamey" if there is something...well...gamey in its GI tract at the same time. I think, I know, there are some really superior Indonesian Arabicas that are non-animal coffees- that are better than KL... will this quence the desire to drink, try Kopi Luwak? Definatley not.

Welcome to the forum CCC, tell us a bit about yourself. I think most of the members of this forum are aware of Kopi Luwak, its origins and the high price it commands. From the reports I've read most that try it have been somewhat underwhelmed, cant speak from experience never having tried it myself, perhaps one of these days.

I've tried it didn't rate it - my experience certainly didn't warrant the asking price Apparently many of the animals are now bred in captivity and the coffee is supposed to taste much better in it's country of origin

Sorry to disagree but quite a lot of it is done this way below where they are fed just the coffee cherries of unknown quality. The days of jungle picked I suspect are over or nearly over.

Have heard this was the case, I'm not a radical animal libber, but, knowing this is now the practice, I can tell you, I won't ever spend a cent on the stuff.

I'm always bemused when people who hawk this shit coffee use the most shit marketing method on the planet - SPAM I've tried it. Its rubbish and doesn't deserve any of the cachet it has or the price it demands. I'll take a well cared for lot that has had careful attention paid to it by a farmer from planting through to picking and processing. I don't want to drink coffee that some lazy bastard has fed to a caged cat and then picked out of its turds. yes, Kopi Luwak makes me angry.

Seems to average one a week on coffee forums it was just this ones turn . All from spammers out to make a $$ (not that there is anything wrong with that). Roast magazine was twittered about this article, also told them what a load of garbage it was. What a piece of promotional twaddle, cobbled together from around the net. Hi all Al I can say about KL is Roasted the coffee, Drank the coffee, and won't rate the coffee. There was just nothing special about it, appart from a mild earthynes ??? have tried much better coffee at half the price. OE ;D
