After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Sous Vide or Urn/Kettle PID Controller

I'm not sure if this is even coffee related, or just simply food related, but surely someone will think of a coffee application for this: http://www.sousvideathome.com.au/

Basically it's a PID to keep temperature at a solid temperature for a period of time using a basic rice cooker, but almost anything could be plugged into it with a heat source. Even plugging into a kettle to keep water at a perfect temperature for pourover.

  • Already similar home brew options in use but nice to see a well presented commercial version :) This is one from Seven Seeds in Melbourne's cupping Lab. AmuY4gGCEAAoUfq.jpg

  • it plugs into the wall socket KK afaik (Not sure if they released a 220v one) it was a project out of kickstarter and was really successful

Yea I like a good steak and I for one would get one just to have one every time I cook one KK
  • I saw an electric roaster (no not coffee) in Aldi recently that looked perfect for home sous vide - just the right size to be useful but not dominate the room - I have seen some home sous vide that are a converted plastic 60l storage box with an aquarium heater (and pump for water circulation). The best/worst was a majorly heavy duty immersion heater coil  on a block of wood over a large plastic storage box with wires bodged into a cheapo PID/SSR on the same block. There are many external PID setups available, some good, some bad but very few actually approved for use in Aus out of the box. I THINK Jim from PIDkits has been selling  a PID kettle controller for years now, but could be wrong.

I have one of these, but I just use it for sous vide cooking, it makes the most amazing medium-rare steak, picture attached. I haven't tried it for coffee. I have a Behmor, but the sous vide controller really only works on analogue devices.
  • i tried getting a unit from sousvideathome recently but they are apparently closed down for business sent an email to them and they responded no longer making them anymore :( surprisingly though, auber instruments (guys who make PID kits for the silvia) actually make kits for sous vide as well!
