Australian Barista champs?

Does anyone have a schedule for the state heats of the Aust Barista Champs?

I thought the SA Barista champs were going to be on about now, but I couldn't find anything about it on their website.

yes, I had a quick look at their site and found a lot about the WA heats, but nothing about SA. According to Ian C. the SA winner was Jonny Pisanellic from FromScratch Patisserie, but it does seem odd that there isn't more about it on the AASCA site... almost as if they didn't want anyone coming along to watch? A

thanks Db - looks like the one; can't understand why it's not on the main AASCA site however; I thought that was supposed to be the site for all of Australia, but it seems mostly to have stuff about WA.

All a bit strange, maybe I'm a bit slow but why are we having the 2011 champs in 2010? then there seems to be a lot of argy bargy going on between the AASCA and the industry, there are obviously politics involved that we are unaware of. ???

As it's to find Australia's representative for the 2011 World Championships, sometimes the WBC is held early in the year as was the case in Atlanta April 2009. As a result it didn't give much time for the Australian champion to prepare, since then Aus comps have been run earlier to give the Australian Champion a better chance to represent us on the world stage.

Hope they post some more info shortly (the ACT champs aren't even on the association website yet), want to go and get organised with accommodation but want to see where they are before I book, not really keen to be running all over town. Brett

more info about which state heat? or do you mean the nationals? I'd suggest trying to get in touch with the barista guild in your state, or hassling AASCA via the website.

Sorry ACT ones are what I was after! I mean really though I don't want to hassle anyone it should be posted on a website for all to read. I know the AASCA is a small organisation but it isn't a big deal to post info. Just my minor little rant for the day. Brett

Ok scratch that they have posted details on their website. I am not an AASCA basher and I would become more involved if I wasn't so far from a capital city, I am hoping to be involved in the comps this year as a helper in some way. Brett

Well the ACT champs are done and dusted and despite some issues with the equipment they ran fairly well. Unfortunately due to the delays the latte art and cupping competitions were postponed to a later date. I had to leave before the end of the day as I had a long drive but I believe the winner was Sasa from Ona coffee. When I get official results I will post. Have a few snaps (not as professional as some) and will post them shortly. Brett

Just confirming that Sasa won, not exactly sure about the place getters. Their scores will be a bit low due to issues with the coffee machines leading to their taste scores being marked down. Sasa also had to deal with some power issues which meant he had to start again. Congratulations to all the competitors and thanks to the organisers and judges it was interesting to see how much work goes into putting one of these on. I found the whole experience really interesting so I would encourage anyone who has the time to get on down and have a look. Stick your hand up to help out and you will get a lot more out of it too!!! As a result of my involvement I (supported by the assca hopefully) will be organising a barista competition in Wagga next year. If anyone would like to help out/be involved in the Wagga/Albury/Griffith area (or anywhere around there too) then I would love to hear from you/them. Brett
