After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Videos of Lacehim naked (hehe)

Saturday morning roast and a few shots,

Micheal is truly the unsung hero of Coffee, he has the equipment to be a real snob, yet he remains every so humble and even puts up with a newbie like me.

After starting a 600gr roast of some Yirgy

We pulled the first shot of some Costa Rica Don Jose Red honey reserve, this was the stand out coffee of the day according to my Mrs with her sophisticated Euro pallet, she loved it and claims it actually tastes like "White Honey" this being a fairly hard bean he was able to extract flavors I never could even come close to.

Second shot was a naked using the fabled JBM beans, it was a little disappointing taste wise but OK I shot a video of it. I get a better result with this bean at home, I guess because it is so soft and I can play with soft beans at a lower pressure maybe?

Then if I remember right he pulled a shot of the Wahana Sumatran it was only 4 days post and was pretty much undrinkable, grassy and just yucky no one would drink it but he gave me some of the beans to take home that I will try a week or so later, also he said they were a dark roast from memory, they will be good just not yet.

we may have done another bean but not sure any way the grand finally was the "Killer Cuban" a very Macho bean, this time We used my little Rosco hand grinder just to see what would happen

here is the video I shot of the Cuban--

For the boys this delivered the knock-out punch!  big juicy mouth feel with buttery sugar cane and Cigar notes
very gulpable!  you just want to put big gulps of this in your mouth.

Micheal is great. thanks for the roast and the fantastic experience!

  • At least I had clothes on C-man.  That machine is very shiny eh.  They are the best nakid shots I've pulled yet on the Achilles.  They still need some work, but at least no sprays getting in your eye. We are all newbies and I'm certainly learning more everyday about coffee just like everyone else. It's was a great session, and I have to say having Craig over has become a fun event of my day, pulling shots, comparing notes.  We are both learning about different beans as we go along. I popped up to Clandestino after and bought some Cuban beans, and had another coffee.  I was a bit hypo by then!   The Cuban is amazing, it's so full of flavour you just can't miss them. Sorry about your roast though.  I should have paid a bit more attention to it while it was roasting, but we got caught up pulling coffees and talking.  At least it didn't hit 3rd crack! hehe.  I think it was just on the start of 2nd crack, maybe a bit dark for what you want to achieve. When your free pop back over and we might do a few 300gm roasts (I've got plenty of beans) a bit lighter to see how they go. :)
  • Nice footage guys and good looking coffees! Just curious - having not worked with a naked portafilter for a long time - does the naked handle speed up extraction times as there is less build up of resistance against the spouts? Or are extraction times much the same as a standard portafilter ? Cheers, Acg
  • My Ugly hand with all the sun damage from working outside all my life. haha Both shots were soft beans light roasted, I think that is why are  so blonde looking maybe? Just wondering what is happening when the lever is down and you are waiting and watching? Is there some kind of pre-infusion happening then? ACG-  I am not sure about the time, but my guess is it is just more visible, maybe just a few seconds quicker.
  • Nice work guys. Those shots are quite mouth-watering. Crema+  ^-^
  • From my understanding when you pull the lever down if fills the group with water, and water is exposed to the coffee puck which as far as I know, is prefusion.  I usually aim for 6-8 secs.  I'm not sure if boiler pressure aids this process or not because when the lever is down, the boiler pressure would be allowed to flow to the group I think.  I might be wrong there though.  Someone else can chime in.  The Strega uses the pump to prefuse I think, which is different again. I haven't seen any difference between stock portafilter or a nakid in regards of extraction times really, but I don't time them.  They will extract the same, but a standard group just makes the coffee travel further, so it just takes longer to get into the cup initally.  You then have to spend a bit of time cleaning up after a nakid.  FYI the pump running in the videos wasn't prefusing, it was just filling the boiler.  It doesn't happen every pull, but murphy's law dictates that it's happened every time I've had a good shot on video on this machine!   You also get to hear the volume of the pump/vibration issue.
  • It all looks great and I bet he taste was just as good if not better.  I though these machines had a rotary pump but clearly listening to the video it's a loud vibe.  It's not an issue in most houses but at my place with a sleeping baby I'd be getting the extra noise sorted and fast.
  • It's a rotary, but louder than any vibe machine I've had! lol.  It can be fixed though with a few tweeks according to Jack, so one day (soon) I'm going to pull the cover off and take a looky. :)
  • with the lever down, do you get any coffee starting to eventually drip? because I seem to remember a Pump bar gauge around 1-2 bar? You only have to watch the video to see the flow and the lever pressure profile the pressure clearly peaks then tapers off as indicated in the flow rate slowing down. I have a theory I would like to try next time depending on the bean being used. when you got the "white Honey" and pollen tastes it was amazing, I think there is still more to come!

let me know if you want any help with that, I think it would be pretty easy to do as long as the access is good.
