After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

which ones are inexpensive, and also do a good job with the milk as well as the shot?

Why does the La Pav overheat?    is it the size of the boiler or what?  can this be fixed?

Cheers!

  • The La Pav pro does a fantastic job with steaming milk.  1.6l boiler 1. Turn on get it up to pressure 2. Bleed off false pressure 3. Wait 10 minutes 4. Pull two shots (a third one will burn) 5. Steam milk and switch off A bit of a trial but good results can be had.  If you regulated the water in the boiler to not ex fed shot temp then you wouldn't get steam.  If you made the voltage variable so it acted like a Silvia or other single boiler you could spend months tweeking it and the time and effort would still be let down by the rudimentary group arrangement in my humble opinion.
  • how long to  you need to switch it off for if you want a third cup?

Not having used one but the laws of phisics would suggest until cool enough to lose enough pressure and refil the boiler These machines to my understanding work like a themos with an element that have a screw on seal / plug to hold in the pressure KK
  • oh yeah!  I still remember when AM unscrewed the top of his Spanish Lever at Lacehims sprayed everyone at the party!  LOL We did pull some good shots with it though.

You can quickly depressurise by leaving the steam valve open but I have comfortably lef the machine for thirty minutes before retuning to make another shot.  I just switched on, bled of the false pressure and went again immediately.
  • Another trick to get a third or more shots is to cool the group with a wet rag to help remove excess heat from it. Works okay and did make a noticeable difference for me on the few occasions that I had to make more than a couple on the trot. When I had one I had a temp strip on the group to give me a visual indication of temps. The group over heats as it is bolted directly onto the boiler (from memory) so whatever heat is generated in the boiler will go to the group. If you're willing to live with its characteristics, it does make nice espresso. I can't comment on the steaming ability as I never made a milk coffee with it.
