After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.
Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.
let me know what you think of the Tiger I was disappointed with it, yet others loved it.
By request Indian Tiger Mountain - single origin Roast date - 19th June (1 week) Dose - 16.5g Tamp - Light Triple fellini (due to fast initial pour) Pour - 20 secs for 20ml Rating - 9.4/10 Seemed like a fastish pour but managed to go the 20 secs.. surprisingly. Lots of crema and looked like it was a winner in the cup after the milk was added. Beautiful coffee. I'm one of the fans of this bean now ... of course, along with my Ponte Vecchio Lusso lever and Compak grinder. Yep .. Couldn't have done it without ya. :thumb:
Up watching the Tennis late early in the morning, so I snuck out to have another Yirg. Ethiopian Yirgacheffe (Konga) - single origin Roast date - 19th June (1 week) Dose - 16g Tamp - Light+ Double fellini Pour - 35 secs for 20ml Rating - 9.42/10 Thought I should have only gone the single fellini .. as the pour was a little drippy and not a constant flow.. so it took longer for the arm to rise to completion. Woweee .. due to the slower extraction .. this coffee was ultra full-flavoured with a deeper colour compared to the previous Yirg. No hint of a downside here .. delicious. Highest rating to date. Using the better Farmhouse Gold milk has added a 0.1 to ratings since using it. This coffee would have rated a 9.32/10 pre-FH Gold milk.
Them's some high scores. I'm just hazarding a guess but I reckon your machine is on the warm side at group temp. I wonder how you'd go with a very special bean I'm roasting this weekend. If there's enough I'll send you some... Reckon your machine'd love it!! Nice stuff Jonty... Kudos!!!

I should get one of those temperature strips I read about to check group temp. Having problems with consistency with Major Tom .. 8.9 through to 9.35 Got lucky with Jonty's beans .. same grind setting on the machine for MT - suited both beans perfectly. All the stars aligned.
Indian Monsoon Malobar (MM) - single origin Roast date - 5th June (3 weeks) Dose - 17g Tamp - KK Gorilla Grind - 4mm finer than MT Triple fellini Pour - 15 secs for 20ml Rating - 8.7/10 Heaps of crema. So far .. can't seem to slow the pour down .. too gushy. Leaves a dry after-taste (mouth feel) - and lacks body. Pretty good .. but not up with the big boys (& girls)
Tighten up that grind mate! Forget the tamp... You can't tamp anywhere near 9atmsopheres of pressure on that puck. Your dosage is excellent, I asdume your distribution is good ... grind, grind, grind.... Go you good thing!!!
I've had many good coffees using 'littleroundman's' polish only method. The more 'dense' type beans respond well .. only it didn't suit all beans .. and definitely not the MM type ones. Hmm? It's coffee time, and my dilemma is - should I choose a bean that rated an 8.7/10 last time .. and try to do better .. or do I go for one that scored a 9.4/10 last time? Tough decision that. Back soon.
Ethiopian Yirgacheffe - single origin Roasted 18th June (9 days) - by Jonty Dose - 16g Tamp - Light Grind - MT Double fellini Pour - 35 secs for 18ml Rating - 9.4/10 Superb. The only downside - is that it is so nice .. you keep drinking it until it's all gone. The ecstasy doesn't last long. Shame that.. :'(

Indian Monsoon Malobar (MM) single origin Roast date - 5th June (23 days) by Brett Adjusted grind setting 2cm finer than std MT setting. Too fine, and although didn't choke .. was a very slow drip ---> sinker. Adjusted grind back 0.5cm to 1.5cm finer than MT Dose - 16g Tamp - polish only Pour - 25 secs for 20ml Rating - 9.1/10 Much better. If not for the dry mouthfeel .. would have scored a little better.
I had an MM from this batch yesterday and am inclined to agree. I've gone a tad dark with the roast which while it would suit a lot of palates doesn't suit mine. The pour was perfection through the VST and the shot looked amazing in the cup. The score however: 9.15/10 I'm going to put my machine up to 95deg today and do the MM and the remaining MajTom. Real hot... Real coffee, real fun!
Indian Tiger Mountain - single origin Roast date 19th June (11 days) - by Jonty The first attempt I did a light tamp instead of hard - and it poured too quickly - 10 secs --> sinker Second Dose - 17g Tamp - Hard Grind - MT Double fellini Pour - 25 secs for 18ml Rating - 9.42/10 Delish. I think I like the flavour of this bean a tad more than the Yirgacheffe.
Hi Moon, I am curious that you have not blended the MM with anything. Just put 10g of Rwanda or Yirg into your measuring device, and top up with MM, say 6 or 6.5g. You may be pleasantly surprised at the flavours you get in the cup. One bean sometimes compliments and accentuates the flavours from other beans, making the resultant drink very nice. After all, that is how blends are created. That MM might be average on its own, but could really shine in a blend. Regards L.

Great to read discussions of everyone's coffee journey in this forum. My two cents worth. Keep the tamp and dosage consistent. Distribution and tamp level to be as even as possible. If it's a 15 kg tamp, keep it as 15 kg tamp throughout, if the basket rates at 18 grams, keep it as 18 grams. Only change the grind fineness / coarseness settings. If possible, change temperature settings according to bean roast profile and age. For consistency, taste at least two espressos and evaluate. This way, there are less variables to consider and more simple pleasures of espresso enjoyment.

After taking tips from ^ I have standardized the dose and tamp .. and altered the grind setting.Indian Tiger Mountain - single origin Roast date - 19th June (12 days) - by Jonty Dose - 17g Tamp - Light Pour - 30 secs for 20ml Rating - 9.5/10 <
Whoaaaah ;D Excellent crema. The pour recently hasn't bean a continuous from the center of the PF. It has been thick drips from 4 points evenly distributed around the outside of the PF - along with another from the centre i guess this would mean the distribution of grinds in the basket is perfect from what I have read about the pour .. with no channelling favoring the grinds in the centre of the puck. Stunning latte that one. Thanks for the heads-up fellas. :thumb: I will be keeping the dose and tamp standard as recommended by the experienced Coffee Gurus (above) and only adjust the grind to achieve the right pour from now on .. see how it goes? Cheers :coffee2: Blimey .. that was a nice cup of coffee. Not full-on .. only it doesn't need to be to impress me. 8)
I needed to find a bean that I could rate above your 9.4/10 that you gave Merlo's Forza Forza couldn't possibly be the best beans going around .. surely .. well not in my opinion anyway. Having said that .. I may have to reset my scores if they do keep going up. As previously mentioned .. the better milk has added 0.1 to the ratings and now that I'm using a finer grind .. it has also improved the quality of the coffee in the cup .. so compared to the coffees I had been making .. the rating has definitely gone to a new level. Just had another Yirgacheffe which compared to the Indian Tiger Mountain is equally as good, therefore also deserving a 9.5/10. The pour was slower, being 35 secs for 15ml and required a 2nd fellini to top up to 18ml. The grind setting for the Indian Tiger Mountain needs to be a little coarser than for the Yirgacheffe. These beans are top shelf .. so once I return back to other beans .. the rating will no doubt drop back. I certainly am enjoying these beans from Jonty immensely . as the coffees have bean superb, and the best I have made so far.
Ethiopian Yirgacheffee - single origin (15 days) Dose - 17g Tamp - Light Pour - 30 secs for 15ml Single fellini Had to do 2nd fellini to top up to 20ml Rating - 8.2/10 Houston - we have a problem :-[ very close to being a sinker this one. Actually, the first one was a sinker .. due to the wrong grind setting - resulting in a 10 sec pour. Crikey - I did enjoy those 9.5/10 lattes .. while they lasted. *Has Moony lost his Mojo again? .. hope not 8) I'm not at peak performance at 4.30am. Up watching the Tennis. Are excuses allowed on this forum?? ::)
Yes. To reword the Beethoven quote: To pull a bad shot of espresso is forgivable, to turn to Nespresso is unforgivable. Of course Beethoven was talking about musical inaccuracies and passion.... I think we may all need some OCD type counselling. I wonder if they've got a forum. Morning all!
Indian Tiger Mountain - single origin Dose - 17g Tamp - Light Double fellini Pour - 20 secs for 20ml Rating - 9.45/10 Tiger has a different flavour .. with a bit of a twang to it - which I happen to like. Will adjust the grind a tad finer to aim at a 25 sec pour next time.. not that there was anything wrong with this latte. It's a :thumb: from me. Yum.
 I'm not like that guy .. trust me  - although I'm sure he's not the only Turkey out there. The La Pavoni lever works in the opposite direction to the PV Lusso spring lever type. His pours when you pull the lever from top to bottom. Mine pours from 3 o-clock up to 12.30. Only watched it once .. but I couldn't pick up on where the fellini was. Different .. so I could've easily missed it? This is more me This guy in below video allows the lever to rise almost completely before pulling the lever down for the 2nd extraction. This a very late fellini move .. and more like just doing a 1st and 2nd extraction to get more shot volume His pour-time was 15 secs total - including the delay between extractions. Way too fast compared to mine. The way I use a fellini move is1. Pull lever completely down .. hold for 8 seconds and wait for coffee drips (pre-infusion stage) 2. If none .. Allow lever to rise slowly until it starts to drip - usually horizontal or above. 3. Once drips appear .. pull lever down fully and release. The pour starts when the lever gets to horizontal I call this a single fellini.4. If the lever is rising too quickly (like in video below) I'll pull the lever fully down asap.. release slowly and check the speed of the lever rising to see if it needs another fellini .. if there are air pockets in the cylinder that cause the lever to jump up. I'll keep doing the fellinis until there is adequate resistance, so that the lever doesn't rise too quickly. Most times .. a double fellini. is all that is required. How long/far you allow the lever to rise varies between users who use the fellini move to what suits themselves. This d00d in the vid tamped firmly .. only in my opinion .. his grind needs to be finer to slow the pour down. If mine poured that quickly .. I wound sink it .. and adjust the grind - then try again. My minimum pour-time is 20 secs for the 1st extraction. * Check it out .... this Cat does the taps on the side of the Portafilter like I do.
Indian Tiger Mountain - single origin Adjusted grind slightly finer Dose - 17g - 0.64g Tamp - Llight+ Pour - 20 secs for 15ml 2nd fellini to top up to 18ml. Rating - 7.7/10 Hmm .. didn't enjoy that one :'(
Rwanda - single origin Roast date - 5th June (4 weeks) by Brett Dose - 16.5g Tamp - Light Pour - 20 secs for 20ml Rating - 9.15/10 After the last 3 fails using Tiger Mountain beans .. it was good to have a nice coffee again. Cheers Brett :thumb:
Looks good but this will rock your world: La Pavoni (not the fancy machine although it's consistently better). Zambia Terranova Estate (home-roast) 15grams, 25ml in 35 sec including 10seconds infusion: 9.65/10 Every couple of weeks a coffee just hits that magic mark going 'all the way'. Thus one was let down by the microfoam!!! The Pav makes great foam but my attention wasn't with it!
It is official .. ^ your scores are out of /11 from now on. You're running outa space there Have you scored a 9.65/10 or better from your Diadema Junior Extra PID & bling yet? If not .. the much cheaper La Pavoni lever would have to be the better machine then .. eh. :stir Throwing down the challenge. Make a coffee from your Diadema using the same Zambia beans .. and post results :coffee2:
Here's a new coffee bean from Varsity Lakes up on the Gold Coast Qld Blackboard - Standard Issue House Blend Roast date - 16th June (19 days) Composition 40% - Honduras 40% - Brazil 20% - Ethiopia Medium roast .. they don't do dark roasts. Dose - 18g Tamp - Light Pour - 30 secs for 18ml Rating - 8.3/10 Considered a firmer tamp next time .. only because the grind has been set very fine in an attempt to extract some extra flavour .. and therefore getting close to being powdery .. I figure a firmer tamp will only choke it. I believe that due to the mild roast, and not roasting dark .. a mild flavour is what they have decided to serve up to their customers. Seeing this is a House blend .. I figure it is aimed at your typical Aussie Mums and Dads .. not espresso drinkers. It is the Gold Coast .. after all. ::) I could have said it was aimed at those who drink Nescafe at home .. and prefer not to overwhelm them when they go out to a Cafe. :coffee:
