After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

EM6910 Pressure problem ?

edited January 1970 in Espresso Machines
Ok....I think I'm probably the staunchest supporter of the EM6910 on this website so it hurts me deeply to report a new problem  :-[

I usually turn the machine off between each use but last night I left it on for a few hours and when I went back to the machine it hadn't placed itself in "standby" mode and it seemed to be very hot around the metal area.  I didn't think much more about it but have since noticed 2 problems that may or may not be related.

1). The Extraction Meter reads absolutley nothing (stays at original position on the dial)
2). There is no final suction of the group head when the extraction has been completed (even when using manual operation).

So it looks like a phone call to Sunbeam tomorrow.  This machine was supplied in Jan 07 so is approx 16 months old....will keep the forum updated.

  • Hey Gaz, I generally turn on, make coffee, turn off but on occasion I think ahead and turn the machine on early, I'm pretty sure the heat around the top left [steam knob] side of the machine is normal as the heat exchanger would be located just behind this and the thermal leakage is what is meant to pre-heat the mugs on top of the unit. As for the rest, does it act normally ie provide plenty of pressure?
  • I wouldn't be too concerned if it was just the "guage" that was mucking up.....but because the machine doesn't do it's final vacuum suction of the grouphead, the puck comes out very wet instead of a nice cake. Rang Sunbeam today and they suggested performing a test with the cleaning disk in the basket to check the pressure (theory being that the meter should definitely register).  Tried it, but still "nothing". Looks like it may be going for a ride in a truck.
  • sounds like it could be a faulty pump to me...
  • I hope so, the Pump has a 5 year guarantee which means I'd still be covered. If not....... >:(
  • Rang the Sunbeam Helpdesk today and advised result of latest test.  Looks like it definitely needs to go to a Repair Centre.  Unfortunately, even though there are numerous Centres nominated on the Guarantee Brochure/Card, only a few are "trained" in the EM6910. So I was advised where to take it and I gave the nominated repairer a ring this afternoon to confirm address and opening hours.  I have to say that the initial discussion with the repairer does not inspire me with confidence (especially when I tried to describe the "vacuum suction" function that takes place at the end of the pour process). But, to the repairer it will go....and we'll wait and see  :-/
  • Well I've said this a number of times....but I'll say it again. In my experience, Sunbeam is second to none when it comes to Customer Service. I'm not exactly sure what was wrong with the machine, the Service/Repair Centre that I took it to suggested it was the pump when talking to them last week after they had had it for a couple of days.
  • boy - annoying that you had that problem, but pretty impressive that they stood by the machine outside of warranty. Don't know of any other domestic machine companies that would do that! dR

Exactly my thoughts....in total contrast, when I had "issues" with my Solis grinder, I had difficulty getting it repaired during the warranty period  >:(

shows just how much some repairers know if the pump was faulty, there would be NO water flow to the group the prob is due to insufficent cleaning, ie backflushing the group with coffee cleaner the 6900/10 has a small orifice for the water flow, and has a tendency to clog up no flow back to the 3way solenoid means no meter reading so ensure you clean the new one properley with the coffee cleaning tablets, preferred weekly graham
  • Thanks Graham....I'll be more diligent with my cleaning, although weekly sounds a bit excessive ? The manual suggests a maximum of 3 month periods.
