Help with Elektra Microcasa

I am travelling from Brisbane to attend a wedding in Newcastle in early Nov 2008
My long time friend

  • KK. The Elektra Micreocasa is a very nice much as your Bezzera. Both have 2 lt boiler, uncover group head, the main difference is in the steal arm, but both are HX machines.  A Elektra has small drip tray so if you are cold flashing washout for this KK, if you manage to come to Sydney drop over the shop to say hello. Regards   Renzo
  • Thanks Renzo I left my answer a little longer to see if any more replies came in Do you know if the Elektra has a flat GH screen or curved like the Bezzera
KK, if you manage to come to Sydney drop over the shop to say hello.
Thanks but not this time However I may be visiting the brother in Sydney possibly in the next 3 months (recent army transfer) So If he is keen to drive me to the shop? then you may see me there KK
  • dunno if this helps but i managed to pull some specs off the website: http://www.elektrasrl.com/fam_retro_specifications.php great looking machine but... anyone had any experience on their commercial machines? pat
  • Pat The Australian distributor of Commercial Elektra will be at the wedding He and his wife will probably be sitting at our table. He is also an old friend that I have not seen in years So I will be asking some Coffee Industry questions I may try and get a project machine from him if one is available  ;) Hopefully at a low or wholesale price If you are interested in a demo I can arrange it ? He is Sydney based KK
  • Wow, nice, talk about the pressure of pulling a good shot though :o In terms of experience on a commercial elektra, we did a comparison of machines running head to head a synesso, the expobar g10, and Elektra T-G. To be honest, the elektra performed horribly.  The temp profiles were all over the place.  Depending of the type of cooling flush you used you could get shots that started at 92, raped up to 95, dropped down to 89, finally to finnish at 91C.  I've never seen anything like it.  The flavour of the shots on the elektra was really nothing special either, still good, but considerably worse than the other two machines. But all that aside, even if it had the very best flavour possible, I still couldn't handle it in the cafe as the drip tray is absurdly too shallow.  I can't stress that enough, it was rediculous! The styling of hte machine was great, and I really loved the togles for the hot water and steam wands, but alas, thats was about all I liked about them.  I'm not saying this is at all indicative of what their domestic machine (or any other machine, for that matter) is like.  Just thought I'd put forward my (brief) experience with one of their commercial lines. A friend of mine recently purchased a very old 2 grp commercial elektra from a roaster here in SA for $500.  It pulls shots but definately needs some work done to it so it will be interesting to see what results we can get out of it. BTW// For what it's worth we found the best results from doing only a short purge between shots, maybe 15-20mls. Best of luck with everything, hope it all goes weel for ya'

I'm in Melbourne - is there a local distributor?
  • . To be honest, the elektra performed horribly.
  • I have recently bean reading about the Della Corte Machines http://www.dallacorte.com/index.php?article_id=143&clang= Very temp stable and reliable I will be looking out for some reviews of the commercial machines KK
  • nice specs on the Della Corte machines but by gum they're ugly!
  • Hehe, thought you'd ask about that pat.  Actually the g10 did quite well, not as great as the synesso (in terms of temp profiles, and flavour in the cup) but still fantastic. Interesting to hear about that cafe in East brunswick, the synesso's (cyncra or sabre)  temp does idle up and down, but from my experience, a lot lot less than any other off the shelf machine.  The only thing I can think of is that the synesso gives it's reading in .1 of a degree ferinheight which is a lot more sensitive (obviously) than most machines that read out in whole degrees celcius, and so it might look like it's all over the place, when in fact it's actually quite good. As for the spec;'s on the dalle corte's, i'd be worried about the tiny 500ml boilers used to regulate the temp at each group, but having not used one i can't really comment

Hee hee Yes they are ugly Pat Not having used one they could turn out to be the swan in a duck pond? I think I have used a G-10 in the uncle
  • Yeah I'll definitely be looking to up-grade for my new (fingers crossed) joint - I like the G-10 and enjoy working with it but I'm up for the challenge of working with a new machine, and am thinking about the 'Aussie' espresso machine produced by John at Espresso Machine Technologies - which is kind of a cross between a LM and a Cynesso Watch this space... P

Are they making a single group or a small footpring double group if so I would defenately be interested Selling the Bezzera will probably pay for 1/3 of it Keep us informed Pat KK
  • lol, doubt it, but good luck.  The machine doesn't exactly scream, "under-stated" ;)
  • Psaigh sounds like both you and Pat have had the benefit of seeing one in the flesh A combination of two of the best rated machines from cafe owners sounds intriguing I need pictures  ;) KK
  • Head to the Mailing Room in Cantebury, and Andy might even let you have a play on one! As far as I know he's got the one and only (prototype) machine in the country, especially designed and hand crafted in Italy for the Australian market! P

Don't tell me you're even thinking of selling the Bezzera! I've tried a lot of pro-sumer machines but I still wouldn't part with my Domus for quids - it just makes consistently great coffee time and time again and I love the milk action! I've even got a monster machine: A Rancilio S24 single group commercial home machine, which is on loan to a mate at the moment, and although this machine too makes great coffee, I still prefer the Bezzera for economy of scale, style, presentation, ergonomics, and its E61 group head P

Yes the Bezzera is sexy and my wife loves it as well I have not pulled a bad shot on it yet and thats saying something The 4 hole steam tip is so easy to use Definitely a keeper KK

Is it called the Synchro? As I have read something on a blog about an Australian machine KK
  • The synchro (not to be confused with cyncra!) is veneziano's new machine (made in itali as well), and is nothing to do with the prototype that andrew at the maling room is testing.  The synchro is a heat exchanger and i'm pretty sure all set for sale, the prototype is exactly that, no where near production ready, and is a dual boiler.
  • Heading down to the wedding in Newcastle this weekend Just can
  • I am a bit afraid to take my own due to airport security
??.. I've carried coffee with me in my hand luggage at least a dozen times with no problems whatsoever
  • I don't see how the new machine combines the features of the synesso and the la marzocco.  It has LM steam wands, but that's about where the similarity ends.  The groups are totally different to both the synesso and the LM and I think that it is only a dual boiler machine ... I think; couldn't see that much from inside it, but from memory the PID only allowed us to set one brew temperature for everything.  As with all machines, it had some things that were really good and some things that were bad.  It will be interesting to see how it evolves into a finished machine. Cheers, Luca
  • Update on the Electra Just got back from the wedding in Newcastle "disappointed" Disappointed that the Electra was not available for use They served up instant for the guests So I will have to wait until my next trip in 3 months when I will visit the family and relatives However I have had preliminary talks about becoming a Roasted coffee distributor in QLD for a Sydney based roaster (not sure if I can mention names) But its part of the Electra distributors business ( a guest and old friend at the same wedding) I will nut out the details to see if it is viable for me to pursue Any tips or pitfalls? KK
  • KK, May be next time, we have one at the shop looks great, good coffee as well, but at this level all this machines are very good. I think that people are attract to this machine due to the chrome finish, brass chrome eagle and the brown bakelite portafilter. As I mention before drop over the shop next time you are in Syd for a cuppa.  May be we can talk some business as well. Regards Renzo
  • Thanks for the invite again Renzo I will make an attempt to make the drive from Newcastle to Sydney when I go down again This time it will be just me not the whole family (5) persons I will also use the time to visit or meet up with the brother that lives in Sydney And if I do take on a coffee distributorship I may need to fly to Sydney sooner rather than later KK
  • sounds very exciting - I think its ok to name names but maybe wait until you've had confirmation? keep us posted! shame about not being able to use the elektra especially after all the research you did! Pat
