Nutty or acidity

Just wondering what people more enjoy a blend with a nuttier earthy flavour or something with a bit more lift I am yet to come across a blend that picks up both in a balanced way.

Good question.  I personally am not a big fan of espresso that tastes like alfoil, there are some blends out there that have a high acid level. I prefer a rich and strong flavoured espresso. Chicksta

I would have to say that choc / cherry on the mid palate, with a lifted floral / citrus top note, and an earthy / muddy / creamy / biscuity base note, combined with balanced acidity would be my preferential tipple... P

actually i used to be a sommelier and the above description reflects the individual ingredients for a blend I'm putting together for the barista comp... having said that when I tasted the finished product yesterday my first thoughts were 'Christmas pudding!" - lots of lovely plummy exotic spicy flavours, yum! pat

It is possible to have both. Pat, for the comp try to avoid any muddled or too many eartht flavours, shy away from too much acidity as well. If you can get clean flavours with good body and its smooth, you are on to a winner.

thanks for the advice it's early days yet but apart from a little tweaking I'm pretty happy with my blend which has a buttery / biscuity base, choc / cherry and plummy mid-palate, and nice aromatic spice / perfume on the nose, with an even nutty brown crema and balanced acidity. whether or not this translates to a smooth finish on competition day, however, remains to be seen! with this being my first comp and all, I have no expectations other than to turn up and give it my best shot, and to see if I an learn a little (or a lot!) along the way!
