ever gotten a really bad coffee??

i have been to so many other coffee shops and what they give me they call coffee!? i have been to a place recently that put suger, instant coffee, milk powder and boiled water :o they call that coffee!!!??? i think any barista should have a license to make coffee so they know what their doing, so every one else dosnt have to suffer. i know other barista's that if the shots are burnt they will still give it to the customer  ::) all hear for license requirements???  ;D

My two nominations for worst coffee ever are 1. Lonestar Steakhouse Aspley - Being a semi-decent family restaurant I figured it wasn't unreasonable to expect a semi-decent coffee.  I ordered a flat white (which I will insert the comment at this point that to most Brisbane cafes means "cappacino without the sprinkle") and receive a mug of filter coffee - the most disgusting version of coffee known to man...at least this man. 2. Earth and Sea Pizza Windsor - all I can say is, is there a readily available basket which only takes 3-4grams or is it something they would have had made specially...weak Weak WEAK...

it was my bucks night. the boys brought a large tin of international roast, and we visited a charcoal chicken shop. They made the poor asian lady make me a LARGE latte, with international roast in the portafilter, and they told her to serve it with not-quite-hot-not-quite-cold-milk. i spent the train ride into darling harbour and the rest of the night doubled over with stomach cramps. in a dress. holding a pink feather duster. does that qualify?

What! Charcoal Chicken in a dress with a pink duster sounds like a great time for a extracted instant latte. I posted it in another thread but I'll rehash it, my most recent crap coffee was a cup of second hand grounds I'd forgot I used earlier in the day that I processed again after being distracted by the kids, I had a feeling they were old but I pushed ahead in the spirit of adventure/lets see what happens. It was cringe worthy and very bad having only myself to blame. Other than that I hate the coffees that come out hot enough to melt the spoon. >:(

OK Matty - so what makes you think you can get away with all this, without supplying a photo - at the very least we need a pic e-mailed in which can be loaded on PICS/Fun stuff! -A

On the topic of bad coffee. In Canberra there is a very expensive restaurant within the Parliamentary triangle and it has a 'cafe' along side. The coffee in that cafe is the worst. It is served at a temp above boiling, burnt beyond identificaiton and no matter what is ordered it all tastes and looks the same . We have stopped going there.

It's a few years ago now, but I once went to a well known cafe (still there) on Chapel Street and asked for a strong caffe latte, not too hot - and got for my troubles a scolding cup of what can best be described as dish-water. So I sent it back, and got EXACTLY the same thing next time! So I sent that back too, and asked for a long black, cold milk on the side, and even this was scolding hot, muddy, and completely unpalatable, tasting of a machine that hadn't been cleaned in a very long time - and god only knows what they did to the coffee to make it taste so bad... So I sent thus one back as well, informing them that i had no intention of paying for something that I had not consumed, wherein a little old Italian man came out from behind the machine and said: "I've been making coffee for 50 years... what do YOU know know about making coffee!" More than you, apparently. Pat

I'll admit that I haven't had much luck in finding a decent coffee in my neck of the woods. Really, it is so depressing, especially when you try somewhere new and it is still puke.

"Cafe Noir", University of New England, Armidale NSW. Ordered a long black. It tasted like mud and vinegar. To this day I havent figured out how someone could stuff a long black up THAT badly.

Yep and the owner still believes his place makes great coffee. I wonder if he ever wonders why the cups are always half full.

Has anybody bothered to tell him so? I often get feedback from my customers regarding my coffee which lets me know if i am heading in the right direction or not p

We have just returned from two weeks travelling around beautiful Tasmania. On the last day we got the best coffee of the entire time. What is with the need to boil the life out of the water and the milk? In Hobart we bought coffee from someone who won an award last year - she should give it back. I took one sip and left it there. Being the adventerous type I tried again in Hobart and could smell the burnt milk in the coffee as it was placed on the table. The best coffee was bought in Stanley at Touchwood Cafe and Gallery. Just perfect and was matched by fabulous food (and craft work and woodwork in the gallery). Can recommend this place. We are pleased to be home again to our local Cosmorex coffee   Apart from the coffee, Tasmania was fabulous. There was 11 MINIs touring and we had a magnificent and exhausting time.

I would be interested to hear from those who have had an excellent cup of coffee from an unexpected location! For my five cents worth we were travelling in New Zealand's remote West Coast, and stopped at a cafe marking the beginning of a walking track in Granity, which is possibly the most remote township in New Zealand!~ And here I enjoyed a most excellent cafe latte, after a lovely coastal walk, just the thing to get the juices going! Has anyone else had a similar experience? Pat

Hey Pat, I also enjoyed many a good coffee in NZ... Been 5 times mainly for climbing and trekking.. Was impressed that the most common brand on one trip in South Island was Illy.. Not bad considering. Enjoyed a Illy latte bowl at the Henmar springs was unexpected but nice. Also found a barista who knew her s**t in Akaroa (French founded village) and have to say I went back for more... She was the only barista who was happy to discuss her coffee etc as she made the brew for me.. My first BOWL experience was in Switzerland (south where French mingles with Italian influences and that was in 1997 - 10 years back). Dont remember that one being great - but being served a coffee in a bowl for the first time was such a novelty, I remember that trip with fondness.. Worse drops ironically was when I was touring Italy. I think I came across a similar barista who someone wrote about in this thread when the guy comes out and says "ive been doing this for 50 years and you think you know something about coffee". Currently my greatest fear is when I have to work in QLD.. I must say, I find it incredibly difficult to find a drinkable cup up there.... JF

Then you should check out nzroaster of this forum, as he has a couple of most excellent coffee establishments on the Sunshine coast P

Except there is no business on the sunshine coast - as this predominantly tourist driven up there.. Most business is Brisbane city and surrounding burbs, or Gold Coast. Sunshine coast is considered "up market", so youd expect (or hope) better coffee is there... Cheers JF ps: will check out the list of sunshine coast stops and try next time up that way
