Interesting Question

Should people in Hospitality be allowed to smoke during a shift and should they also be allowed to lather themselves in perfume.

I only ask because to many times in the last few months I have been able to smell these smells while drinking my coffee as if it permiated the coffee. Doesnt make for an enjoyable coffee experience.

As a cafe owner I would have to tell you that my preference is to hire non-smokers, due to their increased productivity, but as a (recently) reformed smoker myself - and given that hospitality as an industry is notoriously low paid, and high stress, given the extent of customer contact, I cant say that I begrudge my fellow co-workers the occasional puff. Often the smoko break is the only legitimate excuse that the overworked and generally underpaid hospo worker has to take some time out in their day - but having said that I agree that a contingency plan needs to be in place so that the smell of the ciggy does not impact on the taste of the latte. And yes, I agree that the over-powering smell of cheap deodorant and nasty perfumer has no plac e in hospitality! P

Personally I don't like human ash trash's taking our order or serving up the meal some people just reak of the stuff ,I guess this is where industrial amounts of deoderants and other products come in that often don't help the original problem and just add to it.

I am a smoker so on the smoking side of things i will keep my mouth shut! But if you are working with coffee you shouldnt wear strong deoderant, perfume or aftershave as the beans absorb the smell so after you brew them and give them out to the customer there is a faint taste of deoderant, perfume or after shave in the coffee. but this usually only applies to people over do it, think of an old grandma with a strong perfume that puts way to much on! hmm.....sounds like my grandma! LOL

We don't allow smoking at work at all. if they want a smoke they have to change uniforms, which must be washed by them. I used to smoke 6 years ago (2 packs per day) but would never smoke before or during a shift. LE

I've never been a heavy smoker - but I used to enjoy the occasional puff, especially whilst having a couple of bevvys! But I'm please to say that none of my staff smoke, and that makes for a healthy and productive workforce. I stopped smoking when my daughter was born 18 months ago and I've never looked back!
