Buying fresh beans online - where?

I normally buy my beans from shopping centres but have never been sure about their freshness...  So I am thinking about getting some freshly roasted ones online.  Any recommendations?

I had a look at Toby's Estate and they have this Coffee of the World deal where you get 250g of different beans each fortnight. Has anyone tried them?  How do you find them?  Just don't want to be stuck with beans that I don't like for a fortnight, or worse, multiple fortnights!

Good question cheeky, especially in the light of NZ roaster's point in the next thread . Personally, I think just about anything would be better than buying from a shopping centre/supermarket. However, it would be interested to see what peoples' experiences have been online. Has anyone purchased online? What have your experiences been in terms of delivery, quality and freshness? cheers -A

I'd say that if you purchased anything from a supermarket and were happy with that, there's very little online that you could purchase and not be happy with. I personally have purchased onine from Danes, Toby's Estate and Five Senses and have had very positive experiences from them all.  Delivery within 3 days (usually 2) and freshness you could see from the pour. The only hickup i had was with danes where i ordered 250g of X and 250 of Y (i'll skip the details) and only X arrived.  I waited another day to see if the other would arrive but it did not.  I called them straight away just to let them know of the propblem and the lady over the phone was super friendly and helpful.  Without hesitation she organised the the coffee to be sent out and gave me another 250g free of charge.  I said it was in no way necessary but she really insisted. That was great because the orginal 2 bags of coffee were gifts for someone else so from the whole transaction i got to pocket a cheeky stash for myself

I have only ordered online from one place which was local(The Coffee Barun) and as I work with a friend of their's, I got my orders delivered to work within a very short time frame(normally a day or two after order) and it was always fresh.  Not sure on turnaround time for ordering from St Ali(Melbourne), but I bought 2 bags when I was there last week and it is good(both had been roasted within 2-3 days of purchase). My next purchase online will most likely be Five Senses as I went to Gattica(their supplier is Five Senses) in Melbourne and had some great coffees.  Locally, I purchase from Simply Coffee and Rio.  Interested in trying Just Coffee(in Hahndorf), but still not sure.  I saw a local supplier that stocks both Toby's Estate and Just Coffee and it is too old for my liking.  I tried Coffex locally and when asked when it was roasted the lady told me it was probably recently.  It was supposed to be a bold espresso bean.  It was very weak.   I agree with the other guys.  If you are buying from a supermarket, you will most likely do better with an online order.  However, if you are ordering from a boutique shop in a "shopping centre", then it depends on what they are selling.

Thanks for your input.   But no, I don't usually buy supermarket beans.  I usually buy beans from a local cafe where they only sell coffee (in a cup) and beans.  They told me that they get their beans every few days.  Their beans are $45+/kg if that's any indication.  Anyway, I just wanted to try beans from an actual roaster who sells online so to be assured of quality and freshness.

Five Senses coffee sell online only costs $4 for up to 2kilos postage in Oz beans $30 per kilo roasted. It's totally fresh and great coffee, highly recommended. They supply a top espresso outlets in Perth.

Also, some places say they roast to order, others seem to do a batch at a time (pressuming they do this daily?).  Should there be a difference to the final outcome?

I roast 3 days a week so your coffee will never be older than 3-5 days on your doorstep. I also stamp the roast date on every bag so you know if its fresh or not. Roast dates are a must for fresh coffee otherwise you are just having to trust the seller, who is not always the roaster. Not to mention a host of awards we have won over the past 2 years.

I've ordered beans online from a few places, namely Pioneer, Voodoo, and CoffeeHit, and they were all fantastic. The delivery was always very quick (depending what day you ordered), always within 3 days, but usually 1-2.

I can vouch for this - you get an email saying the beans have been roasted and shipped - if you order on Tuesday, invariably you get the beans on Friday.

I've purchased my coffee from http://www.lacasadelcaffe.com.au for approx 3 years. Normally, I place my order over the phone, they deliver for free (in Sydney) and they accept COD. Every Christmas, they ring me to see if I want to place an order before they shut up shop for the Chrissy period.

Hi all new here, The Freshes coffee we've had is from the [ftp]www.thecoffeebarun.com.au[/ftp] Great quality, roasted days from receving (love there cafe blend). Had great coffee from Pioneer roastery (is roastery a real word) Some others havent roast date, when opened the bag oil is just dripping from the beans(guessing old beans) love trying different coffee through our Office(expobar) and then plunge just for fun. www.highridgecoffee.com.au in Melbourne send the order out within 24 hours, and are cheaper than most.  The website is crappy but the coffee is great;  The Coffee Barun in Adelaide is another roaster I would recommend.. Swig Coffee, in Gippsland Victoria is a small roaster with some good blends...
