Perth Coffee prices?

I went on a trip to NZ recently, and was surprised that coffees were more expensive in Wellington [even after taking exchange rates into account] than Sydney or Melbourne, but according to The West Australian, in Perth it is "difficult to buy a coffee for less than $4 and $4.50 is becoming the norm".

Why are coffees so expensive there - would be interested to know if anyone has any idea?

I agree that it's all about expenses first and then think about profits Some shop fit outs can be over $250 K or over - So there's the bank loan and high rents to think about If an owner is unfortunate to be in a shopping centre that requires a new shop fit out on set intervals then you are paddling up the creek without a paddle KK

basically, we're all idiots in Perth. The so called "mining boom" has pushed up the price of everything, coffee included. Sadly, the guy with the blistered fingers that's actually picking the coffee off the tree's still doesn't get more than $2 for every 12kg he picks. It's bullsh1t. There's currently a "price war" on coffee in Perth, but it's all a load of rubbish. One bar, whom primarily sells alcohol decides they can kick off a price war and have a heap of media attention, yet they don't even serve specialty coffee. It's all sparked from the other bullsh1t article about a fellow who spent a whopping $7.50 for a cup of coffee in Perth. (which was a double, with double milk, in a double sized jug, on a public holiday). People will believe anything they read in the media.

That's exactly right JamesM - nothing like a bit of media spin. Making matters worse are freight companies charging stratospheric rates for east-west transit due to the supply & demand - plenty of full trucks heading west and a lot of almost empty trucks heading east. In national pricing benchmarks across many products, those performing the number crunching fail to fully understand the freight differentials - or they make assumptions/allowances in the pricing models that are fundamentally flawed.

I visited Standing Room Only yesterday and enjoyed a Panama Don Pepe Geisha syphon brew for $7--250ml of amazing coffee which equates to $3.50 per cup. Hats of to SRO for providing top shelf coffee for a very reasonable price. Compared to Gordon Street Garage's $15 for a Geisha brew!! :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

"$7--250ml of amazing coffee which equates to $3.50 per cup." Which works out to $28 per litre. ??? Petrol $1.45L, milk $2L, fruit juice $2.50L. $28 litre "a very reasonable price?" I'm sure it is if your the retailer, as a consumer, not so much.  :stir

Hi James - good to get feedback from s.o. who is Perth-based... just a quick question though - you seemed to be saying two different things: 1. the mining boom has artificially pushed up prices 2. it's the media sensationalising one particular place can you clarify - which is it: ie are prices [generally] higher due to the mining boom in your opinion, or are they no higher than anywhere else, it's just the media reporting that's at fault? cheers A
