After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.
Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.
Who told you that???? Sounds like someone trying to sell you and electric grinder to me. If the grind quality is there you might just need to grind more which will take longer. Maybe a spong no.3 would be quicker than your no.1 because of the bigger burrs. FYI I asked jack from sorrentina coffee if the spong would grind fine though for the lusso and he said it could. He ground fine enough to choke it with his no2 ! Said the 1min plus shot tasted nice too. ::) ;D :o I've hopefully got a no.3 coming my way in July. Wouldnt be buying one if I didn't think it would do the job.
LOL I ground fine enough the other day to choke my Presso, we forgot to test grind for the right setting in the latest Spong we bought. Yes you are right in a sense, someone wanting to sell something but on the other hand I also think it was someone that thinks they know everything and that there way is the only way, enough said about that anyway! I actually don't mind the No.1 and how long it takes, it's methodical and calming and I love the smells and then there is the smell every time you take a spoonful and put it in the portafilter :D I'm not going to a machine for the speed, I'm going for quality that I don't think I'm getting from the Presso. Back on topic: The reason behind getting the Smart Grinder for me is for when we have more than a few people over and I can make short work of getting coffees ready, although I'm sure that some of them would love to have a go of the Spong anyway
Anyone interested in a Breville Smart Grinder and Mahlkonig Vario comparison??? I would love to see it done because it's always compared but no one has actually reviewed them together. If your intrested and based in SE QLD PM me. KK, AM suggested that you might be the man for the job? It's just not something I want to take on myself at the moment, but a team effort might make it easier.
Matt from E61 did offer me a loan of their demo Breville Smart Grinder for the review. I kinda said no at this very moment but in true Lacehim style I started thinking away and getting interested in the whole idea. I'm sure he will be up for it if we got a team together for the day to put them both through there paces. I am happy to travel to Brisbane (prefer north side though) or happy to host and supply fresh woodfired pizza. I also want to get the vario set up and play with that first and do a separate review on it's own merits.
I know that this sounds like a bit of a suck up job, but seriously Matt is just the best, he goes far and beyond what other people would do, I not talking sponsors or sellers here, just as a human being
The Vario arrived today. Thank you Matt from E61 for the speedy postage. Unpacked and ready to go, I was really impressed with the build quality, the manual was excellent (yes I read it) and they even tested the grinder before leaving the factory :o and would you believe the PV Lusso group handle fits it nicely and I dialled it in first go... what a fluke! I had a lovely latte, then a long black. To be honest I've never tried a long black because I've always tended to drink milk based and I was never completely keen on straight espresso, and thought it would be the same. Well it blew me away, the taste was amazing and totally different to what I expected! Totally the best coffee I have ever tasted and so smooth... seriously. I was looking for more in the cup!!! I'll be posting up a proper review of the grinder once I've had more time with it, but so far so good. The K6 will also get compared too.

Dear Queenslanders, I think it would be great fun if you put the two grinders together next time there is a get together. Drop me a note and I'll send them up, along with the usual goodies and giveaways. I'd appreciate it if the grinders were not situated anywhere near Troy might be playing with a roaster. I'd also seriously consider giving someone from QLD a Vario if they could arrange for NSW to win at least one State of Origin game before I retire..... SERIOUSLY!

I would be really intersted in a side by side comparison. Things have gone quiet for social stuff, and I even offered pizza to persuade everyone up this way! Still playing with the vario, but it received it's first mod yesterday PM. The standard hook for the group handle was just too far in for the small PV Lusso handle, so I used an old picture hook and bent it to the same shape, just a tad longer. Now the handle sits in the right spot and get ground coffee hits dead centre in the basket!! I think with 58mm handle this grinder would be a really clean, but I do get a slight over spray because of the small basket size. It's still nothing compared to the mess I get from the K6 though.
