I think we need to get away from the whole global warming thing.  Instead, we should be focused on mitigating global climate change.  A multitude of inputs, some feedbacks are involved in the climate system.  Reducing CO2 emissions is only one step.  Reducing the loss of biomass through deforestation is another.  Reducing wastage is paramount as well.

Too many things we can possibly do to help rather than just focussing on emissions only.

Climate change is real, and it is now having an impact on coffee production, and not in a good way.

I'm on the side of not believing that humans 100% cause climate change, HOWEVER, I am concerned about peak oil, peak coal etc far more, as our society is completely built to depend on the fossil fuels, so I'm quite happy to try and reduce the amount of energy consumption as a whole.  I find it ludicrous that up until recently petrol was subsidised in QLD by the government.... What I don't understand is things like the government spending 100's of millions of dollars on solar plants, when the main issue with power delivery is peak power, and the substations, which putting in the suburbs directly would reduce the flows of power needing to be delivered to suburbs etc.

Amazing.  We can't even predict the weather that well but we can magically look into the future and know exactly what a 4 deg increase in temperature will do.  ;D  Personally I remember years ago they predicted the sea levels rising due to polar ice caps melting.  We're all doomed was the media message.  I still haven't got waterfront property! I would loved to have attending Lord Monckton tour when he was in Brisbane.  Did anyone get to go???  It would have been nice to hear the other side of the story.

I think a lot of climate scientists get caught up in their modelling.  I have no doubt that the climate is changing.  It will always be changing.  We humans as a species will probably be able to adapt.  Plant species and animals may not have it so easy.  Current ecosystems will be forced to change.  One thing that is certain, we can no longer continue to do things as we always have.  Our consideration must evolve as well.

It is equal to putting up the GST to 12.5% which would be unacceptable and produce an outcry.  Read the following analogy and you will realize the insignificance of carbon dioxide as a weather controller.  Pass on to all in your address book  including politicians and maybe they will listen to their constituents, rather than vested interests which stand to gain by the  ETS.  Here's a practical way to understand the Labor Government's Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme.  Imagine 1 kilometre  of atmosphere and we want to get rid of the carbon pollution in it created by human activity.  Let's go for a walk along  it.  The first 770 metres are Nitrogen.  The next 210 metres are Oxygen.  That's 980 metres of the 1 kilometre.  20 metres to go.  The next 10 metres are water  vapour.  10 metres left.  9 metres are argon.  Just 1 more metre.  A few gases make up the first bit of that last metre.  The last 38 centimetres of the kilometre - that's carbon dioxide.  A bit over one foot.  97% of that is produced by Mother Nature.  It

To put it another way, no matter what the rocks or polar ice cores say, there has been no species on this planet that has changed their surroundings as much as humans.  Add to the fact that there are over 6 billion of us constantly changing the world we live in. We should just try to tread a bit more lightly, regardless of whether or not CO2 or any other of greenhouse gases are contributing to climate change.

I have to agree WotB.  I think it's less to do with carbon and more to do with the environment as a whole. We seem to bowl into an area... Oh we want to build houses/road etc and just do it with little care for the wildlife living there.  Where I live they are always talking about being green, but don't seem to have a problem chopping down trees etc. On a coffee note there doesn't seem to be a big following of people that buy their coffee roasted or green that first think about the effect the growing/processing of coffee has on the environment.  Well from my own experiences anyway.  I've never heard someone say... I'm not buying their coffee because it's not fairtrade or not organic etc. or they used pesticides on their coffee trees etc.  Maybe as coffee drinkers we should be talking more of an interest about how the coffee growing/processing effects the environment?
