After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Sometimes you get what you pay for.

Woolworths cheap milk is one of these instances.
Heather bought a couple of litres the other day, don't know what they do to the stuff, it certainly resists all attempts to produce a decent micro foam, went through the whole 2 litres with little joy >:( replaced it with Pura and instant success.  ;D

  • I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole :) I used it last weekend and what went into my cup looked like water after steaming. I've tried a few different ones but I'm sticking with Pauls Farmhouse Gold.

Most of the proprietary brands seem to be fine.
  • Definitely the case of milk aint just milk anymore. Do a little looking into 'permeates' and the effects on steaming for a start. There is also certain times of the year that the protein levels of milks do vary with excessively hot weather and or calving which plays up with steaming. Better yet encourage a fair deal for dairy farmers and tell coles and safeway where to place there so called cheap milk as it ruins an industry.
  • Its all to do with the protein content Look at a minimum 8 grams per serve The more the better KK

+1 for Coles milk. I recently moved next door to a Coles and I thought: can't hurt, why not, let's give it a go... To say the Wifie and I threw our systems out is a massive understatement. It wasn't long before we pieced it together and switched back to Pauls Smarter White milk. That's right I said back, and yeah I know, it obviously didn't make us smarter the first time round... I haven't seen Pauls Farmhouse Gold anywhere, where are you guys buying that?
  • For those of you in Melbourne, if you have'nt tried Jonesy's, then you have'nt tasted real milk. It's the old school milk - thick, lumpy and full of creamy goodness.........yes, it can be necessary to shake it up a bit..........that's the fun ! Some of my smarter cafes, the ones that actually get the idea that you need to provide a quality milk with quality coffee as it's 2/3''s the flavour of the milk-based extractions, are having some great success. It's really putting them way ahead of everyone else who thinks it's about the equipment or other factors. If any Melbourne cafes are interested in trying Jonesy's, please just send me a PM, I'm very good friends with one of the Distributors and can put you in touch with them. They also happen to provide some of the best, award winning cheese products in Aus.
  • I agree, Jonesy's is very good. I buy it from a specialty roaster in the Brunswick here in Melb. I'd like to see it one day being available at supermarkets. But for the majority of time, I get A2 and find it's very consistent in taste and microfoam-able.
  • Muscles the only place I can find that sells the Farmhouse Gold is Woolworths.

Coles has it here where I am, right next to the A2 (which I'll be buying for my guests this weekend :) ).
  • I wouldn't ever touch any of those $1 milks with a ten foot pole. Not only is it basically white water (permeate) but the business practices involved in achieving that retail price are damaging to dairy farmers here in Australia and I refuse to be a party to it. for me, for a long time now, it's been Procal all the way.
  • agreed, i remembered i was tempted to buy milk which is cheaper than what i used to buy..and i end up regretting because the taste is not s good

dya want to sell procal to me :P totally agree with everything you've said!
  • Speaking of Jonesy
  • Hi Lou Try the guys at a particular specialty roaster in Lygon St B'Wick East near the Abruzzo Club way...a few doors down from the Helenic Republic restaurant. I'm carefully avoiding speaking for them, but why don't you pop in there and ask if they'd onsell you a litre or two. Good people to deal with and their roasts are delicious. Seeya

Hi Seeya, there is no problem with mentioning them here by name (just no self promotion from non sponsors). I wouldn't mind knowing who your talking about? And if it is Atomica then AndreasM one of the members here 'plays' at their roastery.  :) Another option for non homogenized milk is http://www.schulzorganicfarms.com.au/ Market Lane coffee do resell it and I know several of the organic supermarkets do as well. Drop them an email to ask for your nearest.
  • Thanks for clarifying for me BF......Padre's (Brunswick East Project) is the place I'm referring to.
  • Options galore, thanks! Always good to have an excuse to stop by Brunswick East Project, and my husband will love the chance to pop into the mountain bike store just down the road from it. Win, win situation really. Schulz's milk - they sound good, I'll look into it.
  • Maleny Milk was a favorite here but the fruit shop on Monier Rd Darra stopped selling it so I am back to Coles milk for the moment. FWIW it foams up well and tastes fine but it isn't as creamy or as lush as the Maleny. Any one know of it being sold Jindalee/Westlake area in Brisbane?
