Agree Dry Bean, but then if their happy to take your money then you deserve the service. If they dont want mothers groups, then spell it out up front.  It's easy, then there is no offence taken by the public. Since that incident, I have never set foot in that cafe even when invited for a Sunday brunch with friends. I've 'spread the word' along with others, so I'm sure they've lost income from the situation  :D

That is very harsh - I see it as the group of ladies could have waited 15 min Has anyone "STOPPED"  to ask "WHY" the cafe has that rule What if the cook or a staff change such as lunchtime cook is employed to start at a set time along with servers If the transition time from breakfast to lunch needs to be made by preparing a different food group McDonald's has a set time for menu change KK

I have to completely agree with KK here, it comes across to me as if the mothers group felt like they were the most important people alive and that they should have been pandered too. It was 15 minutes and for somewhere that they had already spent quite a lot of time that should have been a curtsy they could have shown the management.

I agree with both you and KK, there is a good reason behind these rules, they are not set up simply to aggravate customers. The mothers had two logical choices, wait until the designated hour to order or politely decline because of time constraints but they chose to flounce out like a mob of prima donna's, no sympathy for em. :stir

I read something recently (might have been linked from here, can't recall) about what happens if you add a person, arrive early, arrive late etc at a restaurant, and how the flow on can be a major drama for everyone.  Cafes need to have rules, unfortunately, but maybe wait staff could say "we can take your order now, but the kitchen staff won't be ready to start it until 12:00, is that ok?". Probably would have ordered another round of drinks in the wait. That said, a local group that appears to be made on the "Single Parents Alone Together" premise from "About a boy" meets in a park nearby. I reckon if they worked it out so that a coffee cart rocked up at their meeting time, everyone would be a winner!

I'm going to be Switzerland here. Having worked as a cook shift times are important and sometimes it is a royal PITA to be breaking down from one service and get orders from the next.  On the other hand business = employment and most customers can be reasoned with and catered to in some form so why not??  Good humility, communication and service on the part of the cafe staff can work miracles in these situations.  What's wrong with saying the lunch cooks are on break but we'll take your orders anyway and you'll be first cab off the rank.  If meal times are 15-18 minutes average then taking orders at 11:45 makes little to no difference to a kitchen that has to be functioning by 12:00.  I know this! If the cafe wants to discourage the mothers' groups then they have obviously succeeded.  Perhaps this was intentional!  Perhaps there is no PC way to say the nudists group are here from 12 and they are big spenders... in suspenders... spotted dick is off...
