Ok so I'm at a market of sorts in Byron with a cafe owner talking to a bunch of folks when the topic of cafe X comes up

"I can't drink the coffee there it's rubbish compared to your joint," I say - which is met with a stony silence

It's only after we've departed that my friend says, "you know who that was, don't you?"

To which I reply, "Nope, I have no idea"

"the owner of cafe X..."

You can only laugh, I don't know who to feel more sorry for, you or the other cafe owner.  Well at least he now knows the truth about his coffee.

The truth hurts, so many owners out there just want to be told they are great! Anything else they will tell you that it's your problem not theirs. Brett

LOL... serious LOL!  You've set the bar really high there mate. I can't trump your story but I can add my own little indulgence: Family have some cafes in North Q and their bean/machine suppliers are very high volume low quality.  Added to this that that side of the family are tea drinkers you can guess that their coffee production and quality was quite average (single doses too hot etc). Enter me who in a quiet period makes a coffee for self and Mum then to drop a subtle hint makes cafe owner a cup of tea topped with milk froth. A small a pathetic victory for the elitist!

At least now they know, it's up to him/her to see if/how they can improve it now. I can imagine your ebarrasment, a bit like the time I asked a bloke when he was due to give birth...

Look the cafe in question is enormously popular and for good reason - great location and to their credit they're doing a good job and making a fair fist of things - but to my mind at least the coffee skills are rather antiquated and this is translated to the cup Still.... Hard to argue when your making money, which they obviousy are, which suggests they've overall they've got the formula right ...
