After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Op-shop pick ups

edited January 1970 in Have your say
Have had a couple of great pick ups at a particular op-shop recently. A set of four italian made d'ancap porcelain cappucino cups and saucers with the planetarium design for $12, and today a London Pottery David Birch hand grinder for a very minimal sum in excellent condition. Recently picked up 18 duralex 90ml glasses for nix, and two italian made latte glasses with the stainless steel handle and base holder for a buck apiece. I'll try and get some pics up of the planetarium cups and grinder in the next couple of days.

Just wondering what little beauties other folks here have scored. (I did check around before hopefully not doubling up on a thread).

  • I picked up an Atomica in beautiful condition for around $50 a few years back; get the feeling there was another thread along these lines a little while ago??
  • There was another Op-shop thread because I remember someone getting a Rocky for a steal.  I was a touch jealous!!!!  I mean I know thanks o my time formerly at CS that a Rocky isn't as good as a Smart Grinder but still..... VOMIT/WRONG... so very wrong WRONG... I'm okay now.

And repost! Here it is! Still with the price sticker on it. I walked into the store and saw it a mile away and thought that a spare grinder would be nice. Maybe it would be cheap? $125 pleaseeee? I pick it up and thought the price was $249 for a second. Nope $24.99. AWESOME. MINE. How much cash did I have on me? $25. Meant to be!
  • The op shops I go to have hand written prices. You are obviously in a more upmarket area where people not only give away decent grinders, but the charity shops can invest in full POS systems.

Dandenong, upmarket? :D No, this is from "Savers" which could be argued not to be a "op-shop". This is a link to an old news story, so I don't know if the info is still valid: http://www.theage.com.au/news/national/riches-in-rags-opshop-cashes-in-donor-goods/2007/01/20/1169096027880.html Still, who would give away a Rocky?

    Moving upwards certainly.
  • A few gems from the archive. "I think we lost a heap of replies to this in the great data loss episode of early September." - MadPierre I wonder about this now were you channelling the the impending recrashing of the server later in the day  ??? "I'm happy to repost my original post from the lost thread: - I managed to pick up around 20 yrs ago a hand blown baccarat louis XIII crystal decanter from a second hand shop - hand engraved less than 1000 in the original series - and I had someone from Remy Blass offer me $2500 for it about a week later! Needless to say I still have it and I have no interest in selling." - Askthecoffeeguy Third times the charm for this story Pat  ;D "Yep... I'm still just as jealous as the last time you posted this....time was supposed to ease the pain but the greenness of my jealousy is vivid and um ... green. What a fantastic heirloom to pass down to the next generation." - BrettH "I know thanks o my time formerly at CS that a Rocky isn't as good as a Smart Grinder but still.....  I see somebody elsewhere is selling their Rocky because they just got a smart grinder upgrade." - UMN "All depends on what your looking for... As a Decaf grinder and length of life... Give me teh Rocky ;D I am also well aware that may are getting shims, when in fact the main problem is stale beans... The rocky and other small commercials will manage them better, but may not look as neat or have some of the eye candy. That being said, at $199 and lower on a genuine special, then the smart grinder is a great buy and if both burrs are available; better option than the EM0480" - AM "They are a pretty grinder and for $165 practically a steal (provided it grinds fine enough). The smart is not an upgrade from a Rocky just because there is no margin in them for small retailers.  I notice that even Alan Frew is not selling Rancilio anymore. If I saw a Rocky and a Smart grinder in an OP shop and the Rocky was up to double the price of the Smart, I'd be taking the Rocky every time. $165 vs $479 and the Rocky does look less likely a contender." - BrettH "Here it is! Still with the price tag on. I went into the store and saw it a mile away. I was thinking, Man, a spare grinder would be nice, hopefully it will be cheap. Maybe $125?. Picked it up saw the tag and thought it said $249, then quickly realised it was $24.99!!!!! How much cash did I have on me? $25! Meant to be!" - Bottomline

Sadly, not a first time for such nostradamus-like statements. One of a few springs to mind.... Whilst out fishing with my brother-in-law and laughing as I had put down my sisters favourite fishing rod to grab a stubby. Me ... "Geez, you'd hate to see a big 'un grab it now, eh mate"!  B-in-law..."Yeah, Jude'd go off her t**s mate, so keep a bloody eye on it. She'd have yer nuts for Chrissy decorations if ya lose that".  "Ah, it's ok, we've had nuthin' fer ages so why would they start bitin' now".  "Well, it's your arse if it goes, and I ain't gonna be hangin' around when she goes off"! And it went!!!!  Literally as I raised the stubby to drink there was a quick 'fizzzz' and a rattle as it tailed straight over the side. Fortunately it caught enough of the reel on the side of the boat to slow it's progress and I was able to get straight over the side and land on it for a quick save before it went to the deep.  I had forgotten the golden rule of fishing. If there has been no action, a quick stop to grab a sanga or beer or roll a smoke was guaranteed to bring about a bite.
