After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.
Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.
Surprising Aussie bean experience
Tonight my wife and I had a hankering for Chinese, but needed to feed our boy before the restaurant opened and wound up at Dampa Dampa in Mooloolaba.
At first glance, it looks like a typical spud shop - spuds with beans, spuds with mince, etc. And it kind of is, but it's also kind of not.
They've tried to ensure that everything in the store is below $7 (most is below $5) and that everything possible is Australian. They even source their own dried fruit from Mildura.
And get a coffee roasted for them that's grown in the Whitsundays.
After chatting with the owner, they asked me to sample it and give my opinion.
Given how much crap Aussie beans are given, I was pleasantly surprised.
Now the pour was a little fast and the crema very very light.... but only the slightest hint of an under-extracted flavour..... but it was surprisingly nice for all that. Medium body, balanced flavour but no particular 'note' that really stood out and decent mouthfeel. Quite short length tho. Apparently about 10 days post roast. Tasted a little like a milder version of the UNM/BH blend, which is probably a bit of a worry given that it's a single origin.
I wouldn't hesitate to have it again tho. The owners are keen to learn more about it and admit freely that they've been surprised by the 'connoisseur' approach to coffee, which they likened to wine tasting.
Worth a try, if only for the surprise dichotomy of the place. The mince on the spud my boy had was exquisite too.
