After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

BDB Custom Handle and extras.

edited January 2012 in Accessories
Have started down the road to getting a custom handle and extras done for a Crema Member.

Thus thought a good start would be to record the steps..

here is the important first step.

Get prepared for the roughing out stage.

Would be easier on her nose if she invested in a quality grinder... Good job so far  :thumb:  I will be keeping a close eye on this thread...
  • I will love following this, I can't wait to have one of my own :) AM how do you want it put on my website, just copied straight from here?
  • Very nice work AM Mmm I am imagining the new Strega with a naturally red timber pull handle, with matching steam/water toggles, then finished off with PF handles  KK
  • AM, they are looking awesome!! These latest pics really take my fancy. Only problem for me is I have to wait to get them in my hands  :'( I have the same base on the tamper so all good there, now we just have to hope the PF is doable.... Love your handy work  :thumb: :thumb:
  • They are gorgeous AM  :thumb:

Bugger bugger bugger... Like s**t to a blanket
A brief off-topic pause to note that AM self-censored 'shit' but not 'bugger'; the latter being a much more unsavoury word if you check the definition. Not a criticism AM. I notice that bugger seems to have become an acceptable word these days.
  • Well slugger me! It looks like you are having fun so far AM  :stir

Having spent time with the Australian and Merchant Navy, I am well aware of the context and the punishment as to certain acts, while on the high seas and to where is was first coined. PS. If you do find the term (be it slang) "bugger" to be offensive, then drop a line to the Admin.. It could be added to the word filter. Bugger = Slugger
My late stepfather was in the RAN and he used to tell me that sailors were sometimes asked "What do you want - the knuckle or the 'nana?" to which the standard response was "I hates fightin' but I loves fruit"  :D I'm not offended by the term, just noting the censorship of a less offensive word. I'll refrain from any further comment to the application of the term to your wooden handle (I couldn't possibly add to your entendre ) but judging from your other results for various handles, it will be more beauty than beast.
  • Ok question has been put to Minore owners on CS and I have PM'd one of the guys that lives near me. LOL I hope it's ok that I alluded to you Muscles.
  • Good news everyone, the guy that's local to me is willing to help out. Now what do you want to know, I'll photograph, video etc, do I have to find out if it actually works in the BES900 or is the fit enough to tell me?
  • on 1326185058:
All I can say is that the fit of the BDB pf into my Minore III is a perfect fit... Now that may also be due to the seals I have, but fits in great and locks in at exactly 6:00...  Pulls a shot as one would expect. The Minore III is a standard E61 group but some Machines do have slight differences but usually minor.
I forgot they were a real E61 Group. My Office Control has an "Almost" real E61 I think.
  • Scan for everyone to see :) Minore on the left, Breville on the right.
  • Hey Nic, on a side on profile, any real differences stand out? ie height of lugs?
  • on 1326192493:
Scan for everyone to see :) Minore on the left, Breville on the right.
I think that all it needs is the Minore lugs to be made thinner And the thinner lug size is the primary reason the Breville one fits the Minore KK
  • Photo for you Muscles, woeful photo but a photo just the same... Breville on left, Minore on right.
  • Hopefully this will work, you can see in this one that the right hand lug on the Minore is tapered, this is the same on the other side. I seriously have to do something about setting up somewhere I can take proper photos, these are crap.  :head: Breville on left, Minore on right.
  • Looking at both photos A bit of work will be needed on the lugs to make it fit & that's only to test a theory If it works then it would have been worth it, but if not its a PF down the drain KK
  • That is f**king gorgeous.
  • Couldn't have said it better myself Kelsey. My turn, my turn, my turn :)
  • Yep...  A big saw next time...  Drill and tap to 10mm..
What a silly design That's exactly what I thought - cut off that handle insert section then and drill & tap KK
  • My guess is that they wanted to make sure that it well and truly was one piece, for stability of a handle it's great, just not so great when you want to adapt a different handle to it :) AM I'm quite happy to just chop the handle off down here and send the rest up to you.
  • Thanks for the profile pics SS... AM, they look fantastic, I can't wait to get them back here and put them to use!!  :thumb:
  • AM I can't see why not, he's got tools of all sorts and lathes to use. I'll ask him and let you know, that would be a great way to do it, less pressure on you as well.
  • AM - OH said yes he can definitely do it  :thumb: I'll make sure we take photos all the way through to show everyone so they can all do it themselves first.

    Nice one Nic!  :thumb:
  • The postie just dropped these to me  :thumb: wood_by_AM.png The photos really don't do these justice, they look even better again in real life. Cheers AM, A job well done mate!
  • Oh. My. God. That's just stunning. Not sayin' I don't love my own woody accessories, just sayin' this is really something. Nice work AM, you're a lucky bugger Muscles!
  • That is some seriously nice timber you got there muscles!  Congratulations AM, another great job. Love the handle shape too.  Can we have a photo with them next to your machine?  That would be sweet.
  • Now that I have used these, I am in luuuurrrrrve.... Quick story: I got home, warmed up the machine preceeded to grind, dose, tamp and lock in the new PF. Cup under spouts, press manual and go for the milk. Start pouring milk in to the jug, hear crash, bang, boom, coffee everywhere - WTF!!  :head:  I figure the lugs on the naked PF are not as worn as on the original so I didn't lock it in as hard as I should have - that and I didn't want to force this one and break the wood my name is Muscles afterall.....  ::) The PF feels heaps better in my hand and will take a tad getting used to the new balance of it. Scared of scratching or bumping it but even after the disasterous first use I described above there was no damage done. As for the tamper, it feels great. I liked the balance and total weight before but for now it seems a bit better with the new handle. I find a bottom heavy tamper is easier to center when resting on the grounds ready to use as it kind of levels itself out (if that makes sense..?). Anyway, here is a pic of them with the machine: wood_close.png And one of my shrine for good measure: coffee_shrine.png Looking at the last pic I find myself searching for other things that could be made out of wood! AM, what have you done?
  • Absolutely beautiful  :thumb: My turn AM lever machine is awaiting KK
