Valentines idea's for a Coffee Fanatic

My boyfriend loves coffee & for Valentines I wanted to go all out & get him a great coffee related gift, only problem is I can't think of anything.

I like it when love bites So I put forward for your consideration - Small items, like books are great also consider a set of dosing tools Med items, such as a well fitting tamper to use  or hand grinder to display and take on trips Large items, such as a roaster & some green beans KK

Thanks for the idea's. Buying gifts can be so hard & in this day & age we seem to have almost everything. I am sure a La Marzocco would go down great - but alas I am too cheap for that!!!

I think the LM GS3 would exceed most budgets? For Valentines Day, I think a good gift for a coffee lover would be to take them somewhere special that serves top notch coffee. But I don't think it would compare with a brew you have lovingly made yourself. You could splurge on, say, a bag of 'Cup of Excellence' beans from one of the site sponsors here and make him a cuppa with that served with a nice treat. That sort of thing would appeal to me.

If you're in Perth, my restaurant is perfect for a Valentine's Day celebration. Great food, wines, service, and of course, i'm making the coffees as the icing on the cake. To give you a clue which one i work in, have a look at my name. Personally, small but thoughtful gifts are better. Most importantly, it's how you spend the quality time with your OH is what counts. Mine GS was, about the next 20 birthdays. I always enjoy a good breakfast and a great coffee for my birthday. My wife often takes me out, sometimes at home too. other options are cups, barista course, cupping course

I used to think this also and would rail against manufactured American commercialism masquerading as sentiment. Then last year I discovered that Valentine's Day has a long and storied history. In Roman times Feb 14 was an important holiday and the day of a romantic rite of passage for young people. On the eve of the 15th, young girl's names were written on slips of paper and placed into jars, a 'lucky dip' to see which young man would draw each girl and then be partnered with her for a festival that would start on the 15th. In about 270AD Valentine of Rome was supposedly martyred on Feb 14, beginning the name (but not the association with love). In the year 1400 in Paris on Valentine's day, a 'High Court of Love' was established, dealing with love contracts, betrayals, etc. Judges were selected by women on the basis of their skills in poetry reading! By the 17th century in England, the fashion of sending little notes on fancily decorated paper to lovers and close friends had taken hold and by the mid 18th century it had started to really take hold, finally giving way to mass-produced greeting cards by the middle of the 1800's at which time it had also spread to the U.S. So although it's definitely as commercialised as any other holiday, its history goes back far longer than I suspected - so I'm willing to give it a bit more consideration than I have in the past. Now if we want to talk manufactured traditions, look no further than the De Beers company and our habit of spending tens of thousands of dollars on shiny transparent rocks to declare our love. No point railing against that one tho either, is there?

We set a $10 limit for valentines day. It generally means we have to make something (first valentines day with my now wife, I baked her a love heart shaped cheesecake). Also, on the whole diamond thing being commercial (which I 100% agree with), people don't always have to go with tradition. My wife didn't get the whole Engagement/wedding/eternity set. She got ONE ring instead to cover it all, as that was the most practical, and what we felt suited us best. The ring I got my wife as engagement and wedding was technically a "dress ring". It's strange, however, while we were engaged and people asked what kind of wedding ring she was getting, and she said "I'm not" how people looked at us as if we were breaking some cardinal rule.

Absolutely. Even fully understanding the artificially derived nature of the ring tradition, I found its pull irresistible. But then, I really enjoyed the process anyway and got to work with a designer to create the perfect ring set, meant to match my wife's active lifestyle.

There are quite a few places that do free public cuppings on a regular basis.  It's a good way to get acquainted with the protocols, and to simply taste a bunch of coffees.
