I heared that Daniels coffee school in Glebe is in trouble? Is it following the smh article? Plus is there any truth there's a new coffee school opening up thats got strong international backing?

Has anyone heard anything, who, where or if its true?

Had given feedback here on the forum from time-to-time that we haven't had great reports on this school, but wasn't aware of anything specific - can you advise on this article - what did it say, and when did it appear? -A

Hi, thanks for your reply, it was dated Oct 22th in the smh I believe but wasn't too damaging. I understand he opened the first coffee school 10 years ago. I haven't heard good things either, the best schools are the ones accredited by TAFE. I found out the new coffee school to open in the CBD is owned by a UK guy who's the F&B Manager of the Sydney Convention Centre and with great investment. It seems we will have yet another coffee school in Sydney but at least it will be operated by someone who's still in the industry. I believe I've met him at a MEA event and he's a likable and knowledgeable guy. Also I was in Melbourne the other day and many coffee shops serve Lattes by presenting you with a glass of hot milk and a jug of espresso on the side. Not sure it will take off in Sydney. really? i've never been served a coffee like this in melbourne before?  we make a 'reverse mac' where we do the same thing, but with half a shot of espresso, so people can help themselves - but that's on if they order one that way! where did you experience this? pat

Saw it done in Hobart once. Is the traditional Italian way to make a Latte or cafi latte as victorian say or a latte to go ;D

I've seen it sold as a 'latte machiatto' before, i really don't understand the point to it though, except for those that want to control how much of a shot of coffee they want to put into their coffee.

Just read a story in one of those newspaper 'freebie' mags about the 'Barista basics' coffee school in Sydney... might be OK, but the guy gave a list of recommended cafes - one of them was the Lindt cafe in the central city. Lindt make great chocolate, but their coffee is scary - if that's the calibre of cafe they recommend, doesn't say much about the standard of teaching at the school! dR :o

Apparently Barista Basics is quite a successful based school in the Sydney CBD and have schools in Melbourne and Brisbane. But the feedback I got was a bit money hungry and not to bothered about care and finished product. I have interviewed a few graduates for my Cafe and they couldn't make a Latte. I think more take your $$$. I believe the sydney coffee school will be good looking at their website. There are many out there but are usually sponsored by coffee companies. Lindt I agree should stick to producing chocolate. I hear NSW Gloria Jeans is owned by Hillsong? Is that true?

Gloria Jeans (the franchise as a whole) in general is owned by by Hillsong.  Individual proprietors own their prospective stores but all the franchise fees end up with hillsong

Its true about Hillsong. I live in Glebe and I noticed that the coffee school has now closed down but I see that they have refreshed their website and expanded to Brisbane and Melbourne. I think this is because of the new school on pitt street which seems to be giving them a run for their money. Barista basics also seem to be on the defensive side reading their website. Because the glebe one was closed I sent my daughter to the new sydney coffee school in pitt street and she said it was excellent. She said the trainer was excellent and they offer unlimited practice classes. I am going down to Melbourne soon so will check out this new coffee style.

This is based on the session I attended and personal opinion only, but having attended both courses at Barista Basics and the Glebe Coffee School I can certainly say the Barista Basics course and equipment are a lot more polished and professional.

as mentioned recently in a couple of other threads, the Danes Coffee School [in Brookvale] turns out a lot of pros - it's probably the most professional course in Sydney. -A
