After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Lever shot question

edited January 1970 in Espresso Machines
Could lever owners please shed some light on this for me please.....

Every YouTube I've seen on levers always show pours into one cup regardless of whether the portafilter has 1 or 2 spouts.

I'm not questioning why pour a double into a single cup (I know I do even though for the most part I'm splitting 20gms over 2 cups using a double basket) but more....

1) Are baskets on levers smaller typically therefore splitting it over two cups means two light on espressos ?

2) Is there such a thing as a double basket for Levers?

3) Do PVL owners ever make 4 espresso's at once given the twin groups?

There... I've declared my ignorance as far as levers go (but dang, they're sexy as hell)

  • A lot of the smaller domestic levers have smaller baskets, PVL in particular and a lot of the older Espresso only Italian ones. The Pavoni, Micro Cimbali and Cremina are closer to 'normal' at 14-16g doubles. Not sure but I think the PVL double was closer to 12g? My commercial Izzo (55mm groups) runs around 17g while my 58mm Fioranzato will take the 58m 'standard' double or triple baskets so doses of 18-23g depending are all available. Shot splitting I don't bother as I like to taste the coffee  ;) Double pull on the Pavoni at home works great at 200-220ml cups. At work the Izzo I drink a full double so I have taken the splitters off the groups it also allows me to put those horrible 12 oz buckets under them easier. Customers get 1 1/2 shots as standard in 8oz and doubles in 12oz, 1 1/2 is just slide the cup out before the shot tails off at the end. There is no normal or standard just a bunch of conformists out there with pumped machines
  • @ BF - thanks for the insight but what about at home if you've only got a single group lever and you've got half a dozen standard coffees or more to pump (no offence) out and handed out at the same time? Do you still go for the singles or split to cut down time?
  • I currently only have the Pavoni at home so 2-3 double shots with or without milk is the limit. More than that I go Syphons (multiple because I have them  ;D ). The plan is to put the 1 group at home when I move house in a week or two. I do have some 150ml cups that I have run splits into from the Pavoni but for my taste is still a little weak.
  • It depends on the capacity of the piston chamber of the machine On my Strega the capacity is for a double shot This is a pour using a naked PF with 18gr basket from start to finish on My Strega that I took a few weeks ago [embed=425,349]
  • Nice work KK! Looking at the video, is a 1min30sec (or so) a typical extraction duration on the Strega for you and if so, how much ml does that produce?
