After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Where to stay in central sydney?

Heading to sydney next school holidays for a few days and we are looking for reasonably priced accommodation in central sydney (big ask).

Four of us. Currently looks like around $200/night. Any suggestions?  Any websites worth checking for bargain accommodation?

  • I quite like the altamira in darkinghurst, but it's not salubrious. It's a bit run down these days and it's dog and 'lifestyle' friendly, so you get some interesting sorts there. I picked up a decent deal on The Menzies on my last trip, about $160 a night in the older northern wing. I called the hotel direct and negotiated a $15 buffet breakfast. It's literally on top of Wynyard Station and is the epitome of a classic hotel whose glory has faded. Not bad for the money tho.
  • Try the discount travel/accommodation websites such as wotif and lastminute. I booked a night in Brissie on the Thursday before Easter 2011 using lastminute and scored a good 4.5 star hotel on Ann St. near the station for about $120. It was a 'mystery deal' so you don't know which hotel until after you pay for it. Another way to do it is to look at the discount prices offered and then ring the hotels direct and negotiate. Forget 'rack rates'. These are like 'RRP' and the top dollar price.
  • When we attended Cafe Biz we stayed at the Mercure Sydney, located near Central Railway Station and Railway Square bus axis, a short walk to Darling Harbour, with  train and bus transport right at the door, it was clean and comfortable at reasonable rates.
