Anybody know Ethical Coffee Luwak producers

Hi,
We are trying to put together a list of ethical Coffee Luwak producers. It is proving pretty difficult. If anyone knows any, please leave a note in our comments and we will add them.
Coffee Luwak = civet coffee/cat poo coffee.

NO 99% of the worlds Kopi Luwak is either FAKE or FARMED from caged animals  >:(

Only last week I took a local Coffee Roaster to task for running a contest to win the bag some 'kopi luwak' was shipped in. Even the facebook contest for this dubious prize and the way the offer was framed was designed to promote the unknown bean processed from the ass end of a civet cat. This sort of marketing stunt just feeds the so called mythical taste etc BS of this coffee. While I have a healthy respect of this roaster and they 'claim' the free range nature of the coffee I am more than a little skeptical in spite of the assurances given. Unless you deal with the natives who pick it up off the Forrest floor directly it is a market designed to deceive the gullible and abuse the animals. Mmmmm, why ? Personally, I think its the most ridiculous thing on the face of the earth. Like putting together a list of the most ethical Ivory traders, or great white shark hunters, or tiger penis suppliers.

It is  a FARMED animal product. What else would you expect? Milk, meat, eggs. Same difference. Even free range is not any guarantee of  quality or ethical production. For example, I could cram 43 chickens (or presumably civets) into my 1m by 1.5m garden shed, debeak snd declaw them with a red hot wire and still describe them as free to roam. Ethical? Honest marketing? Effective at persuading the gullible? If money is to be made, those that lack the power to stand up for themselves often get abused. coffee locator - if serious, you could try contacting Compassion In World Farming (ciwf.org.uk) who may be able to provide some assistance. As they are Europe based it is unlikely they can give direct advice, but may be able to suggest groups that can help in your search.  Research is all about following leads and not getting discouraged when you run into dead ends more often than not.

There is only one way to harvest Kopi Luwak ethically That is to collect it from the forest floor from wild Civets It should be noted that one should know the history of this product Told to me by an Indonesian - The story goes like this Farm workers and pickers were prohibited by the colonizing Dutch that established the coffee farms to pick berries for there own use In those times most lands were agriculture based and man along with animal coexisted and knew each others way of life Local people wanted to sample the coffee at first as a curiosity and decided that if we can't pick it we will collect it from the ground. This led to the collection of Civet droppings to brew for personal use So that's it in a nutshell Personally I think that the natural bean is a better product and more diverse taste wise KK

These days the word "ethical" is over used and used to great effect in marketing campaigns.......which is another way of saying that to insert the word "ethical" into a "campaign" will jog a few more clients to give you their money.  The interesting byproduct of that is.......how "ethical' is that? (always the cynic here). Notwithstanding...if you are serious about your project suggest you contact professional longstanding experienced GREEN BEAN BROKERS and ask them, because they will be in the know....if they want you to know!

Hi all I've just returned from a six week stint in Bali where I witnessed  kopi Luwak production first hand and there is nothing ethical about it - caged animals being force fed an exclusive diet of coffee fruit To my mind at least there is no way you could go into commercial propagation of this product in an ethical way as I don't see any way around caging the animals to ensure production Besides which the coffee I tried was nothing special - but I suspects that has more to do with local roasting methods rather than the quality of the green beans themselves which appear to be excellent Cheers, pat
