After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Experiment of the Day

Coffee Appreciation 101

The never ending "my coffee's (the espresso, the lartaye, the beans, the brand, whatever...) better than yours" debate

Assuming proper coffee making and milk texturing technique throughout.

Make two standard espressos;
Leave them out on the bench for 24 hours (keep the dust and bugs off);
Warm them up in the microwave (DO NOT GO ANYWHERE NEAR BOILING);
Cup one and put aside
Pre warm a standard size cappuccino cup;
Decant the uncupped espresso into the capp cup;
Texture milk;
Add to the espresso portion to make a cappuccino.

Cup the cappuccino
Observe honest results from both cuppings.

I did it this morning.

    I am so doing this however, I feel as though my results won't be valid because of my equipment.  Should I upgrade to a Sneezio and Roburt first before trying?  :stir
  • edb2181aa2a432f230c5c5ea88f1bf75.jpg This one was fun and really enlightening.  Two ristretti, cling-filmed and on the bench overnight.  I made a fresh short black and a fresh flat white to try alongside the 'stale' versions.  The short black (microwaved gently) was not only drinkable but surprisingly so retaining the body and smooth chocolatey taste of the fresh one.  It just lacked a little of the brighter fruity nOTes of the fresh. The flat white was practically not discernible as to which was which and surprised me... really surprised me.  What have I learned???  Perhaps with my palate I should be trading in my wonderful Diadema Junior Extra PID for a moka pot or worse yet... Nexretcho.  I would love to lie to you and tell you that the tastes were chalk and cheese but while the short blacks were different, neither was unacceptable.  If I were served any of the four coffees on my bench this morning out and about I'd be more than happy.  Even the SB wouldn't be a remake at home but perhaps I wouldn't finish it. A very interesting experiment.  Thank you A!
