After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Few more Water & Filtration questions

edited January 1970 in Have your say
Am falling behind a bit with getting things done here but on track to be on the road in the next 4 weeks sometime. I know I havent given a lot of info about my setup so here goes...take one 1974 vw bus and do a little cutting, add coffee machine, grinder, fridges, some nice wooden worktops and some good beans and hopefully Im gonna end up witha mobile cafe rather than a mobile coffee van :)
Still have a few little things to workout but forgot about the most important bit,the water! Am looking at a 20 litre tank and maybe an extra 10 as backup but what about filters, are carbon/charcoal filters ok,reverse osmosis, uv?Most places here dont bother with filtration systems and plumb straight into the mains but Im a sucker for the details. I know its not a good idea to strip all of the minerals out of the water but how much is too much,so any help would really appreciated.

  • Hi  :thumb: Regarding boilers, heating elements ect They are affected mainly by calcium carbonate , it builds build up over time and can ruin a machine or parts in the water lines So its a good idea to test the water in your area and its also a good idea to have a filter system in place There are specially developed filters for commercial coffee machine applications these days , so its just an easy filter replacement Look for the Everpure filter, I had one installed on my Bezzera BZ40 Crema sponsors Barazi Bezzera & Coffee Parts sell them KK
  • there's a good water thread around here somewhere, think this might be it: http://www.bestcafes.com.au/forum/espresso-machines/espresso-machine-water-quality/ it'll depend on what the water quality is like from the tap you use to fill your tanks, i think alot of cafes use a two stage filtration setup with softening & charcoal bed cartridges definitely want to be considered, on top of the coffee, you're right, it is the most important bit!
  • That was fast:) I know the water locally is hard, can pretty much see it building up on the kettle when it boils, other side of the city is the total opposite. Would probably save a fortune in filters filling from there:) Am a little more worried about stripping the water of the minerals altogether. Think there was a post here about the taste being drastically effected when different systems were compared ie charcoal/sediment vs osmosis vs straight tap or bottled. One other little thing,is just sterilising the tanks enough or is it worth using some kind of uv setup too? I know its different sides of the globe but  could do with a starting point before things get finalised. Thanks Rrc
  • Regarding sterilising Boiling will do it better than a UV filter and your Coffee machine boiler will be OK With regards to mineral stripping by the filter system, that can be controlled by the correct selection of the filters themselves There are also remineralisation systems after the bad stuff is filtered out at the final stage I have such a system currently set up for our drinking water and to fill the Bezzera Strega Its called Wellness KK
