After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

EBay Craziness

edited January 1970 in Off-topic
Now EBay and other Gum-like auction sites are frowned on at other forums with links to auctions removed or replaced with "evilbay".  We do miss out on so much frivolity and hilarity by not mentioning the elephant on the Internet so... Take photos of the listed and go your hardest!

Exhibit A.

Something fishy abou this coffee grinder...

C'mon Brett - there is absolutely nothing wrong with that listing. It does have a wonderful crema-like hue about it.
  • Actually, this is an awesome idea. Combine a cafe by the beach with a popular fishing spot - catch dinner while grinding the coffee for today's customers. I like it.
  • Okay, if he's going to this much effort why spell Espresso incorrectly?? http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=111173407939&globalID=EBAY-AU Is is an advertising ploy?
  • All parts soaked in vinegar - just like the corned beef I had last night  :D
  • This is the classic Italian Rancilio Z9 machine with zero electronics - this is totally manual - literally there is nothing to break.
Indestructible? Wood-fired? Brew switches are for show only? Coffee is extracted via gravity feed?
  • And of course, it has been configured for domestic use......yes, we all have one of those spare, 15A power outlets conveniently located near the sink in our kitchen.

Not sure about anyone else But I do have a 15amp outlet conveniently next to the coffee machine area  One never knows when a machine turns up KK
  • I would be reticent to run a machine that size at home given the electricity costs of getting it to temperature and keeping it there for 4 coffees a day!  Not a 15amp point in sight at my place!
  • Just file the earth pin down Brett
  • Taking about eBay craziness. http://www.ebay.it/itm/121177185353 I pick it up tomorrow and hope to have a good idea of its condition by tomorrow night. No rush on the coffee front as I have an L1 and there is no way that this brute will ever be allowed into the house.
  • strange listing??????
  • Congratulations DMH!  What a stunner that will be!!

There is the difference between you and I. Net cost of running a two group commercial is actually pretty low. I have two of them. Maybe 60 cents a day each in electricity. Cheap hobby. Wouldnt pay 2k+ for a coffee machine though.

Is that all??  I thought they'd be more than that given most are 15 or 20 amp.  I've some space next to the toilet so perhaps a compact 2 group only.
  • My two group compact runs on 1650watts right now, takes 45 mins to heat up, then idles at 25% duty cycle. When insulated it should drop to 10% or so - effectively consuming 165 watts. The real issue for many people is the time to get up to temperature and the sheer bulk of commercial machines. Plumbing isnt an issue as they run happily from a tank and my 1l drip tray is more than adequate for home use. My full size two group is a beast.  That lives in the garage until I sell it. No room left indoors for it. :(

Thank you. I now have the machine and it is in pieces and has already drawn blood. Details of the rebuild follow: http://www.bestcafes.com.au/forum/projects-rebuilds/gaggia-tell-2-group-and-reserve-rebuild/

Ah the blood you spill now will make the coffee all the sweeter later.  Thanks for starting an awesome new thread.  I have to live vicariously though you rebuild genii  because I already have too many mid-life crises!

  • $40K for that piece of junk? Not for me. Drip trays aren't even straight.

Ah subjectivity and aesthetics.... I love it!
  • So, in comparison , this  is a bargain at $11.75k http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Elektra-Espresso-Coffee-Machine-Cafe-Commercial-San-Marino-Faema-La-Marzocco-/281199423000?pt=AU_Business_Industrial_Restaurant_Catering_Equipment&hash=item4178caae18 $(KGrHqNHJBMFJG!bYkoIBSRrm1BBkw~~60_12.JPG And for those REALLY serious about their home coffee... the same vendor has a new , 1 gp Synesso Cyncra for $11.5k $T2eC16FHJIgFHSodBniqBSRrwDGw4w~~60_57.JPG
  • Okay... Good work chaps... Time to sell the family and extend the mortgage...
  • I like the Synesso with the paddle They have a 3 group at Poineer Roasters I believe
  • And the latest... Just so much good material in this description I hardly know where to start: "You are bidding on a Gaggia Expresso dose Coffee Machine. It comes with all parts and instruction manual. The Gaggia Espresso Dose is a semi-automatic espresso machine. It has internal systems that automatically control the pump pressure (to provide consistent pressure for coffee) and water temperature for the boiler (to provide consistent steam temperature). For those who want to customize the flavor of the espresso, it allows you to engage the pump manually to control the water flow. This is most suitable for intermediate level baristas. As a pump-driven machine, it forces water through the grinds using an internal pump. This uses a higher pressure than a steam machine and results in a better tasting cup of espresso. With 15 bars of pressure, this machine is well equipped to deliver a great tasting espresso shot. The minimum pressure required to do so is 9 bars. Easy to use - we have loved it. Move overseas forces reluctant sale!"

It appears to be several cut and paste passages that just don't blend well
  • Beware the April Fool.... Although, as they say, there's one born every minute.... Whatever happened to the great Aussie Prangster??? I suppose he was arrested 'hiding' on a Greek Island wearing the most ridiculous wig... Oops, that really happened didn't it? :laughing loon
  • Okay.... Here's a favourite pastime of mine.  Trolling and trolling eBay!  First up: a machine that doesn't exist, in name or in this physical relm...
  • Next we have the optimist that someone will drop almost $10k despite an obvious spelling error!  What else could go wrong....
