After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

SIngle vs Double Baskets

Interested to read some comments about extraction times to extract an espresso (25-30mls) when using a single basket compared to using a double basket. Of course the double basket would produce 2 espressos.

  • Yes John,It is a bit of a juggle....most cafes have
  • Bean Counter If you are using 12 for a single and 18 for a double, what are your extraction times for the single versus the double? If you are achieving similar extraction times, how have you compensated for the single versus the double? Is the 12/18 actual grams or the just the size/name for the baskets? JD
  • Personally I always only used a double basket, if for some strange reason only 1 drink is ordered (not as common as one would think in a busy cafe) I normally would use the 2nd: * as a test and take a sip from it myself. * or add it to my iced coffee mix (yeah stale iced coffee, so shoot me). * or look at it after 1 minute, shrug and throw it down the sink. * or poor a whole lot of these into a cup and serve them to the chef cause they deserve it. * or just make a coffee and give it to a pretty waitress Skars
  • Well Skars I use cold expresso for my iced coffee, and people love it, so don't worry. I have a second hand Bezzera TL2000 machine which was set up to pour a single shot at 20 sec and the double at 25 sec, so I found the best compromise was to have slighty more coffee than the standard 8-9g in the single group packed at the right tamp and have the double basket with 18g with less tamp pressure. It's very much a feel thing, which is why I'm interested in what other punters do. So the bottom line is my customers are getting a slightly long ristretto from the single basket and a slighty under extracted dose from the double (which is handy for the "can i have a weak coffee" brigade)By the way.... do new machines still have the long black buttons?....ie a 60sec pour!!!!
