After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

New in the business

Hi,

After reading some of the messages from the forum, it looks to me that there are lots of passionate people here. I am currently looking to work in a coffee shop to learn all about the making of a good coffee and the managing of a coffee shop. As I do not have any experience as a barista or as a supervisor, it is quite hard to find a position. So I was wondering if any of you will give me a chance to learn all this and pass me on your passion about coffee making and management skills.

  • Hi PC - thought it would be best to put your post in the 'trade page' which is supposed to be the area for those in the industry. It would probably be useful for you to make a follow-up post to give a rough idea of the area you're in PC, and any related experience you might have. In the meantime, if anyone has any suggestions, please 'reply' to this post. Good luck Admin.
  • Agreed and I will go one step further, also need to know your age, and it would be nice to know what kind of background you come from (you know, brain surgeon, taxidermist, public servant, school leaver or god forbid, financial adviser...hehe)! With regard to location, if you are in Canberra you may wish to give us a call. Cheers FC.
  • Thanks for all this. I have been working the last 8 years in customer service positions ( This will give you an idea of my age  ;) ) Therefore I am great with people. I used to work in a food shop as shop assistant. I have experience in food handling, food preparation. I also did some waitressing jobs. So I will be excellent in a caf
  • PC Have you tried the local cafes??? JD
  • Local cafes! There a lot where I live but I am not confident going to ask for a job in a place where they only employed young and experienced people. Am I right saying that Caf
  • ...Your strongest impression is always made face to face. and it also gives you the freedom of knowing who your dealing with. So it is benificial to both you and your potentual employer. Its a good idea to observe the clientel so as to have the upperhand in knowing the attitude you ought to carry.... oh and can you smell the coffee when you enter...cos if not..keep walking..
  • Don't be concerned about you lack of experience.  Although no longer a cafe owner i prefered to employ people based on their ATTITUDE as opposed to the experience.  It is much easier to train someone who is keen to learn... My advice is to show your prospective employer that you are keen, and open to his/her requirements...
