500g Stovetop Drum roaster?

I've been thinking about building a coffee roaster that's basically a rotating metal cylinder mounted using a stand on top of a stove.

Anyone done it before?

You mean like a milo-tin roaster on a frame?  This would work with a gas stove but you'd need veins in the chamber for agitation, a whopping big tin for 500g, put up with lots of smoke and chaff, and be able to dump them beans quickly for cooling.  A KKTO would be an easier more effective option.  By the time you get the tin roaster working you'll be ready for the volume and repeatbility of an upgrade.  Why not go straight there??  :thumb:

If you Google "$25 Stovetop Roaster" a link to a Coffee Snobs thread with some additional links will come up. May not be 500g but gets close and will give you some ideas. If you want to start small and from scratch use a stainless steel cocktail shaker with a bolt through the base and one through the top as handles / supports, put a wooden file handle on each end so you can pick it up when hot. A "cocktail roaster" can be built for under $20 You could use it at home or on the road using a camping stove when travelling

Good info Beans!  The hassle I had when building this type of roaster was the lack of agitation. Do you shake the container like the Baby Roaster technique??

The larger of the two ie the $25 roaster which was known as the Toddler in various posts has very basic paddles inside, there are images on CS. The Cocktail Roaster is a case of shake rattle and rolll. No internal stirring devices. Not ideal but a basic, no frills, low cost roaster.
