Question for Robur users

Hi everyone

after being somewhat influenced by the large conical grinders owners thread, I decided to keep an eye out for one on the 2nd hand market. Anyways, I have recently acquired a Robur Doser unit that had seen a years service in a cafe. It looks in pretty good condition - burrs turn freely, it's quiet when running, doesn't sound like there's any wobble when the burrs are close to touching, oh and it grinds beans ... but, it makes a reasonable "clunk" noise when the motor first starts or stops (when you turn the switch on or off).

Maybe it's nothing to be worried about, however my existing grinder is a Mazzer Mini, and I use Compak K6 at work ... neither of these grinders make such a noise when the motor turns on or off. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

My BNZ makes a start noise as well DrD It's not mechanical so nothing to worry about I was told once that its a run start capacitor that makes that noise KK

Have quite a few Roburs, but most are Electronic models. On the Robur dosers I own, they don't make a clunk/thump at the start and stop phase. Slight noise, but nothing I have ever worried about. If it's still working OK, then may not be too much to worry about in the short-term. Certainly no noise on the Electronics, however having never opened up a unit I do not know if they share the same gear systems.

Thanks guys ... really appreciate your feedback. It does sound like a mechanical noise to me ... I will keep an eye/ear on it. I haven't had a chance yet to put it through it's paces ... however it looks quite a beast and I think my better half will soon ban me from looking on the internet  ::) Regards, Dan

I have just ground in my Robur and have the same noise . As a sparky I would suggest this may be an electrical relay as the motor is large .

Most of the larger Mazzers have a contacter in the base to actually start and stop the motor and that's probably the noise you are hearing. KK your BNZ probably has the same thing too as capacitors are silent (although getting slightly OT the mechanism used to engage / disengage the start capacitor may make a small amount of noise). A quick google for the innards of a Robur confirms it, in this post it is the white black box with the left arrow pointing to it http://www.home-barista.com/grinders/mazzer-robur-electrical-problems-t5044.html#p55071 The contactor is basically a heavy duty multi-pole relay that is normally used for controlling three phase power items. When they are energised to turn on there is normally a noticeable "clunk /thunk noise"
