After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Barista Hustle

Something interesting from Matt Perger, he has started a free weekly newsletter called the Barista Hustle kicking off in early 2015. Directed to baristas wanting relevant up to date information and technique improvers.

Easy to sign up to and will be worth watching where it grows too.

The smileys are exclusive to Google Chrome users!   :pan :stir  >:D   8) Kelsey and I are going to have a session next week to iron out any issues left over.  :P
  • First issue of Barista Hustle due out on the 2nd Feb, at this stage Matts intention is for it to be on extraction with a trouble shooting guide, along the lines of a flow sheet.  I have no connection to this project but have followed Matt Pergers journey for some time, he is a very experienced barista pushing the boundaries, thinking out side the square and now sharing with the coffee community. Worth signing up for and a lot of good information will land in your inbox. Chester
  • I won't sign up as I'm trying to limit my subscriptions... But I'd appreciate this thread being updated so I can quickly puruse the pertinent topics.
  • I can't wait.  Although I'm not a working barista I'm sure I could learn quite a bit. :)
  • Have to admit to a dose of skepticism re any of Matt's  promotions. If it's free why the need to provide a first name and email address? I suspect a bit of data harvesting happening here. :-(
  • First hustle has arrived.  DB You can just read them on his website at the link provided.  If you sign up you get notification via email for the issue but it's not compulsory. http://baristahustle.com/hustles/ Personally I think it's good to see some of the leaders if our coffee industry helping others to become more aware and more involved by providing information.  I'm sure plenty of our members will enjoy the read. :)
  • Yep a good read Lacehim, and certainly will help those new to the world of coffee brewing (or struggling) get dialled in to good coffee quicker.
  • I was good info even for me.  I know what I like in a coffee, but I've never been good at getting that into words to describe it! lol.  It was an interesting read, and it's great to see Matt putting this sort of stuff out there to improve everyone's knowledge.
  • I think what enthusiasts as well as those in the industry fail to realise and understand is that the biggest majority of people (myself included) that drink coffee are consumers, along with beer and tea drinkers we have little or no interest in the science that goes into making/preparing these beverages, however, we certainly do know if a given brew tickles our taste buds. I don't really care what the final SG of my favorite beer is, at what baume or
  • Barista Hustle isn't intended in any way for consumers of coffee DB and as you say of no interest at all to the drinkers of the brown.  But for those pulling shots be it at home or in a commercial environment (target audience) there is an opportunity to maybe learn some stuff and improve your technique, can't see where that's a bad thing.  Information and learning comes from a wide array of sources this is just another one, use what sits well, discard what doesn't.

I fully understand what you say CC. I also agree that home baristas/roasters with an interest in technology would certainly gain from these articles. The reason I pointed out the differences between home and professional coffee people is that the home group are consumers whilst those in the industry are creators, most people who join this forum fit into the home category then quietly disappear because a lot of the content does (and always has had) a commercial bias.
  • just read the first edition - very well written and well informed - if the quality of writing and content remains at this level then i for one wll be a convert!
