After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Smart Grinder Pro

edited January 1970 in Grinders
Hi all, noob question ahead alert.......

I have just cleaned my grinder, for the first time ever, mind you it is only a couple of months old. Master 16 and I gave it a good going over, pulled the burrs out and what not as I found I was not getting out the amount of coffee per grind as I was.
I find it is now grinding finer than it was before I cleaned it, almost enough to choke my poor little Icona, and I have had to up the "grind time" .
Would the finer grinding be due to cleaning the grinder and it running better?

Master 16 wants to know what I am complaining about. He says it is like getting your car serviced and complaining  it is running better  :pan.

TIA, Sue :).

  • Hi Sue, I've got the non pro version of the Breville Smart Grinder (BSG), and I give it a clean with a brush every bag of beans.  It doesn't take long and it's a good time to clear it out. :)  I love mine, easy to clean, use and no mess and the quality is good enough.  I think you'll find it copes just fine when you upgrade your machine.  :thumb: Possibly if you had a lot of build up of coffee this might have been effecting your grind quality.  You can just re-adjust the grind/dose.  If you grind finer you'll have to slightly adjust the dose up, and if your moving coarser you'll have to adjust the dose down a bit.  I wouldn't stress about the grind changing, you'll find that you are always changing it to adjust to age of beans, different beans etc.  Dosing and grinding I found was one of the hardest things when I was a newbie because it was always changing and because we only pull a few shots a day at home you don't have that constant usage to help you get it right.
  • Hi Lacehim, it sure is a beauty of a grinder, I am hoping it lasts me for a while. Cleaning after each bag of beans sounds like sound advice to me. I shall follow suit :). There was quite a bit of build up and as Master 16 is home sick from school and felt like tinkering, I left him to it. I have readjusted the grind time up by about 3 seconds and put the grind back up to 18 but the next cuppa seemed a bit bitter. I might have to up it to 20 and see how it goes. I guess Master 16 was on the right track then but I won't tell him that, I think he knows it anyway ;). Thanks Lacehim :).
