Effect of weather on coffee grind

Hi from a newbie,

I have noticed that as the weather gets colder, I have had to reduce the coffee grind size, is this normal?

Hi JGM and welcome! In answer to you question: absolutely!!  I've seen the need to change when something as simple as the air conditioning goes on at home on a hot summer's day!

I think it has a lot to do with humidity. Seems to be less of a problem in hot dry areas of the country. My experience is as the beans age over a week or 10 days I have to progressively have to tighten the grind by a notch or two. We live in the mid north of SA, very dry.

Usually I would say it goes the other way: more moisture in the air means increase the grind size marginally to prevent over extraction Or, if you're decreasing grind size to compensate for moisture you probably need to reduce the dose as well. ..

I suspect your right Pat, not a problem I have any experience with, have lived most of my life in hot dry areas.

You're right Pat. When it's humid I increase the grind size (coarser) to compensate.

Thanks to all, I should have mentioned that I live in Queensland where we have humid summers and it is now much drier in winter.

just got back from two weeks in brisbane and the sunny coast and although we had some sunny days its was definitely mild and overcast quite a bit too which definitely impacts on coffee - not sure how things are further north, but...
