edited January 1970 in Have your say
Hi there

Im a coffee enthusiast that is looking to gain a greater knowledge of everything coffee. Are there any barista training schools mainly in the sydney area? and if so, which ones would you recommend?

Cheers

  • Hi Waz Welcome to the site - some names for starters - the Lavazza training school in Surry Hills - call Valcorp 9281 6630; there's also Paul Jackson's Gourmet Coffee Institute in Manly - try 9938 4522. Hope that helps... Cheers Admin ;)
  • Thanks Admin  ;D That helps heaps. Ta Waz
  • Hey Waz, Another great way to increase your knowledge, go round and visit lots of coffee places, those recommended, and those not, then note the difference. Start talking to the barista's in places that serve great coffee, build a relationship and you'll pick up lots of info that it would take ages to pick up on your own :) Have fun, JB
  • Thanks for the advice jb Been spending lots of time visiting cafe's and expresso bar.  I usually end up looking like this at the end of the day -> :o hehe Cheers Waz
  • Noticed this post from a couple of months ago...Waz, we've done a feature on training in the next issue of Crema, which should be in newsagents from early next week (around 16th April) - you may find that useful. Cheers Admin
  • Been spending lots of time visiting cafe's and expresso bar.
Waz, Don't want to be pedantic but it is espresso not expresso.  Good luck with your training. Ristretto  8)
  • Thanks Admin, Ill take a look when it comes out. you can never get enough training   ;D Ristretto: Just a typo, but thanks for pointing that out for me  :P
  • Waz, From personal experience, you wont learn everything you need to know about espresso by attending a training course.  All my experience was on the job.  It takes alot of time, practice and dedication.  But do get a copy of the new crema magazine and check out the courses if you want. Good luck and if you have any other questions im sure we would all love to help. Chicksta
  • Thanks Chicksta :) I know that just by attending training courses and such, it will not improve my ability to make good coffee. however, i am determined to learn as much as i can till the day i can get on-the-job-experience. Due to other commitments i cant devote myself to switching jobs and the cafes here are more focused on food than coffee, but hopefully in a couple more months ill be able to get a coffee related job and continue learning from there.
  • Waz, Keep at it.  I never knew anything about coffee before I started and I get praise for my final product without fail.  Determination is the key. The Chicksta
  • speak to George Sabados at the aasca. why? 1. he doesn't profess to know everything 2. he doesn't bullshit 3. has more experience that most chumps out there
  • Hi there, how about you call the lavazza school as it goes from a-z in the art of coffee,or piazza d,oro as they have a very good course going as well.good luck .OE :P
  • E.F, Some how I dont think that would be a good idea for Waz.  If he gets a job they dont want to have to untrain him =/   poor guy.  Where do you live Waz?
  • hehe Currently i live in dubbo, a medium sized country town. However, ill be moving back to sydney in September/October. Thats why its practically impossible for me to get some decent on the job training.
  • Call the barista school at victoria coffee, piazza d oro or the lavazza coffee school, good luck.
  • i agree with chicksta (we gotta agree sometime!
  • John, I dont think we have had a disagreement yet  :P But i do suggest that if you can Waz, get down to the Aroma Festival. There is plently of opportunites to learn something that you already didnt know, just by watching and someone might even let you have a go behind a machine if they arent to busy. Chicksta
