Music in cafes

I don't know if this issue has been covered elsewhere, but why do cafe's have to play the music so loud?

I had a meeting at a cafe this morning, and it was very difficult to hear each other. This is not the first time this has happened.

Oh, and by the way, we didn't just order coffees and sit around for 1 hour....we did order food.... :P

Well, I tried to get those dang kids to turn down that confounded music on their stereophones! the youth of today.....phah!

I think it really depends on the type of cafe. The ones I usually go to play the music soft, but they're usually a more relaxed atmosphere cafe, not the hip get in get out type. I have to say, I went to Badde Manore in Glebe the other day, and I was blown away by the music which was playing. I recognised the singer, and realised it was the same Jazz/swing group who I had been listening to quite often, from a free CD I got at uni. Louis Jordan and the Tympany Five. So cool~~

speaking of which, what would be everyones fav cafe tracks/cd's? have to say "the verve remixed" (vol. 1 & 2) cruisy old school jazz, blues, and swing, with the added attitude of some breakbeats...
