Can't wait to have my first try of this "cat poo" coffee  :-X. Has anyone else tried it?

Just discovered what this Kopi Luak is.I thought this was a joke at first until i found it in "the complete guide to Coffee" under "Coffee Producing Countries". It goes: "There is one more type of coffee obtainable  from Indonesia,which is Kopi Luak. "Kopi" is the word for "Coffee",and the Luak is a small weasel like animal particularly fond of coffee cherries.Villagers collect the animal's "droppings" and remove the hard coffee beans,which are then washed and further processed by less natural means. The flavour is exceptional, and the beans command a high price".

Can you post a detailed review of your experience with it,sounds interesting. I'am still trying to get my head around how beans that have passed through a small animal end up tasty and value added. Mmmmm ,I wonder if the possums in the garage would like the ripe berries from next doors coffee tree?

Yeah, i'm intrigued now too.Merlocookie, you first posted this a month ago.I am a little worried for you mate. Not hearing from you since you tried the weasel poo coffee.If your still out there,how was it? and how much does it cost?

It's funny, but if you check out the newspapers, you'll find a story on this every three or four months, as they look for a filler and then 'rediscover' Kopi Luak. I don't doubt that it does exist, but i'd be interested to know if anyone has actually tried it! -A

I've never tried it but know plenty people who have. Normally the ones lucky enough to make it to SCAA conferences in Seattle. Apparently the civet cat secretes a glandular bodily chemical on the input side which reacts with the acid in the bean. I'm not sure what it tastes like but everyone I know says it is a 'novelty' coffee. It is a huge seller in Japan and I think they take most of the production.

I was reading a blog of one of the coffeegeek moderators, and his local roaster sent him a small pack of KL as a Christmas present. His comment was along the lines of 'my palate is not worthy' ie: he loved it.
