Home Roasting - how much do I need?

edited January 1970 in Have your say
This is a question for roasters, cafe owners, or whoever...

I am going to roast my own coffee for my wedding in March. We expect to have about 50 adults who, on average, may drink 2 coffees each on the day (perhaps).

Assuming the people making the coffee will actually run a couple of shots to dial in the grinder, season machine, etc, does anyone have an idea of how much coffee I would need to roast?

I will post a separate question about blends based on the green beans I have...

Many thanks folks

  • I'd say about 2 kilos just to be safe.
  • So, if I do 60 gram lots, and it takes on average 10 minutes for each lot, I am looking at about 5.5 hours of roasting......hmmmm.  ;D
  • I do 150g and 140g with my poppers, and roasting 2kg would still take a long time. For a group that size, you'd be better off buying pre-roasted.  If you're still keen on roasting yourself, then you had better do it over a couple days. I'd also look into increasing your batch size.  There's no reason why a popper can't do at least 120g with a chimney.
  • Also depends if they're pulling singles or doubles. Given the time to roast, I'd think singles are the go ;) 50 people x 2 shots x 9 grams = 900 grams plus a few hundred grams spare. I'd reckon 1.2kg would be more than enough. Regards, Gary
  • Patrick, we always work it out at a round figure of 100 cups per kilo so you should roast say around 1.5 kilos to be safe... Unless it is important to you to roast your own for your own wedding day, I wouldnt waste my time, particularly as I have just decided I am going to supply you with a couple of kilos of one of our premium fresh roasted blends with my compliments for the day  :D Let me know when the time comes, and we will courier up to you with our compliments. Best regardz to A & yourself, FC.
  • FC - many many thanks - a very nice 2006 gesture and greatly appreciated (was that going to be 2kg of JBM?  ;D  ;D!) And thanks for the info fellas. One of the reasons I wanted to roast the coffee (my initial mental calcs came to just over 1kg) was because we were looking to make our wedding (at least in part) a celebration with family and friends of good food and drink. Hence, my desire to supply my own home-roasted coffee, despite the fact that I know the quality wouldn't be there (compared to professionally roasted coffee) and it would be a PITA. But it was a price I was willing to pay to share it with others. Cheers P
  • Ok, I have just received a small batch of green beans (thanks a bunch, JD aka Pinot) including a bag of peaberries (origin unknowned). Anyone have any ideas what the roast profile of a peaberry should be like? And no, I don't have any other info. Cheers P
