After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Cafes open between Xmas - mid January

LouLou
edited January 1970 in Have your say
Between Christmas and mid-January is often the best time for me to do some cafe crawling, however it's also the time the most cafes take a well deserved holiday, so I struggle to find any open.  Does anyone know of any good cafes who will be open in Melbourne during this time?

  • Great idea Lou - if anyone would like to add information on cafes open over the Xmas period, please feel free to add here or under your City in Best Cafes thread! A
  • I for one am taking a well earned brake - the cafes closed from the 23rd dec reopening on the 11th January - but we're taking a month off to drive up to Byron bay where we're doing a house swap with friends! Cafes are a very hard slog and quite relentless compared to most industries - especially as an owner - and substantial breaks are required to avoid burnout and to renew enthusiasm!
  • Not sure about Melbourne but two years ago the only place I could find in Sydney that wasn't closed for half of jan was The Source, am heading back there again for Christmas new year and would love to try some different places so if anyone can help me out I would be most appreciative. I too am closing for a month for exactly the same reasons as Pat. Brett
  • A know a little kite shop in Port Fairy will be doing coffees over that time dodgy operator but ;) When I used to work in Melbourne the CBD was a wasteland for 2 weeks so your best bet will be to go to the better ones in the burbs I reckon to stand a chance of them being open. With the post Christmas sales on Sensory Lab in DJ's would be a decent chance of being open.
  • In Sydney, as already mentioned, The Source really only closes for christmas day and that's it. I'm usually in Adelaide over christmas and new year's, will most likely be camped out in Bar Nine again like last year assuming they are open everyday except christmas day as well. I hear Deadman Espresso in Melbourne will be open new year's day but don't know much past that.
  • Wow, Deadman Espresso's open on New Years Day, that's doing the hard yards. Though I imagine they'll reap the rewards from a monetary point of view (I hope so). I fully understand cafes closing at this time of year, everyone needs and deserves a break and they seem to be expected to be open for the rest of the year. I just want them to be open for selfish reasons! Enjoy your month off Pat!
  • I know many cafes using Atomica Coffee will be open all over Melbourne, some of these will be closed on public holidays though. Atomica Cafe itself on Brunswick st Fitzroy Ray Cafe on Victoria St Brunswick A Minor Place on Albion St Brunswick Cafe Salida on Little Bourke St between King & William st If you're in the Outer East i'd go to Indulgent Cakes on Were st Montmorency, great coffee and cakes/pastries, open until new years eve then taking an extended break. There are several others that will be open if you're looking in a particular area? Have heard all of the St Ali cafes will be open.
  • doubt there are any [decent ones] open in Adelaide - the whole place pretty much shuts down over summer! L
  • Fresh from the Twitterverse "ST ALi we are soooooooooooooooooooooo open all summer, everyday, normal trading hours, serving you with love xoxo"
  • Market Lane We're closed for a little break now, but we're back for the 29th, 30th and 31st. Look forward to seeing you all-ready for coffee!
  • Brett if you're heading to Mosman you could see if Penny Royal is open.
