Deli or Bag Grinder Discussion

Ok I'm in the market for preferably a used deli grinder in good condition for around the $1k mark - any ideas peoples?

  • For that price you may be able to pick up a used Ditting 804 if you can find one, they're a great grinder, mum's got one at her house for her pourovers. Otherwise a Climax grinder could be an option, they're about $1200 new but go for about 1/3 of that on ebay.
  • This may or may not work out for you, but can I suggest you pose this question to 9bar espresso services? They do a lot of ex lease stuff (and is where I got my Super Jolly at a fantastic price), and seeing as cafe's seem to go bust all the time, I'm guessing they'd have a few deli grinders sitting there.

Please define what you mean Deli Grinder ?

  • Hey there ATCG, I have also been looking for a $1000-ish deli grinder and just today I received a quote from Sam at Climax Coffee so thought I might as well share the info with you: Climax Coffee Mill - Approx. 18Kg per hour an medium grind. - Life expectancy of burr does depend on the grind, but 2 years of solid use should be the norm. - The cutter size is 75mm, replacement cost $58.00 per set. - 300g/min on medium, 250g/min for espresso - Motors are Single phase and made in Melbourne. - Size 590mm H,  195mm W, 315mm D. - Price of L Series Grinder  $1044.00 + GST
Note: Stainless steel Body +50.00+GST Contact: Sam La Fauci, Climax Coffee
  • On a budget Climax are a good option. Pat, there's a Ditting on eBay located in Ivanhoe, meets your budget if there are no bids... Budget for new blades just in case.
  • Also there is a Romanian brand called DIP They look like a Ditting http://www.coffeeroasters.com.au/products-coffee-industrial-grinders-2.php Edit - Barazi uses one as I saw it today when I visited so I thought to pass it on to you KK
  • I have a fairly old Climax and have used a few other newer ones. Personal view is fine for anything non espresso/turkish (being fussy). Just watch some of the older ones they need re-machining to take the current burr sets. For Espresso preground I have been doing 2 or 3 short bursts through a spare standard grinder for 250g lots. I have used a Ditting and your 1K based on what I have seen on the bay of evil would go close to getting you one. With decent burrs will do the job well for Espresso on up. Happy hunting.

thanks AM - just cant see this machine having the finesse that I need - I've been using my coffee roaster's top of the range Ditting on loan while he looks at my dk60 for the 100th time - and its very hard to imagine myself using anything else - but I simply dont have $4500 to put into a new grinder at this point in time!
  • Thanks - I've got my eye on a ditting on the bay of evil asking price $1k at the moment - so we'll see how it goes...
  • Thats the same model Climax I have AM so comments I made above apply (machining needed to fit new burrs). Still a good buy for the home roaster that grinds a bit of plunger for friends.
  • Own quite a few Deli grinders - Climax, Ditting, DIP, Compak. Personally, I don't like the DIP as they clog in the shute and the calibration is all over the place - they are a strong grinder, but you get what you pay for - it is certainly a lot of bang for your buck if you can live with the compromises. The Climax is like a tank and the grind quality is so-so - again, good for the price. The Ditting is superb, blades are exxy. The Compak R120 has been performing very well - quite fast, cool and calibration/accuracy is first rate and only a small amount of clogging at the end of a grind session (say up to 20 or 30g). The bag shaker on the R-series is very good and in my mind an absolute necessary for any half decent deli grinding. fitting 1kg bags underneath can be a little close, but overall I'm happy with it.
  • Hey guys I'm pleased to say that my roaster, Joshua Bailey, has kindly offered to sell me his Ditting - which has been my loan machine these last few months - for a very reasonable price, and I must say, having used the Ditting I think it would be very hard to go back to any other machine - they're just to well built and too reliable and they do exactly the job that you'd expect of them in a commercial setting!
  • I have been offered a very fair price for a shiny, new Mahlkonig Tanzania... with 83mm burrs and built in bag shaker. Very, very tempted... does anyone have any input I might want to consider before taking the plunge?

The Grind quality will be great based on the Guat Lab's I have had a play with. Depending on your budget and if your not pregrinding much or any espresso (tell them you don't and sell them a small grinder  ;) ) then talk to Climax they are circa $1k not $2k'ish

I was in a similar position and bought a near new SJ and put a funnel on it for under 1K NZ via trade me. I mainly use it for pour over but have done a few bags for friends, and a more even grind than my grindmaster (not sure what how long the burrs would last depending on kg's per day)
