After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Anti Virus and the AVG 2012 upgrade

edited January 1970 in Off-topic
Long time happy user of AVG and generally a smooth transition to new versions until my 3rd PC upgrade tonight.

Seems some installations won't upgrade to the new version (50Mb+ file). So tried un installing and going for a full install second time around for an other download and still failed. Tried cleaning the registry and manually removing the remaining AVG evidence so download for a third time and still !@#$ing fails  >:(

Seems there is tucked away in the back blocks of AVG's website this issue with the new version upgrade is known http://forums.avg.com/ww-en/avg-forums?sec=thread&act=show&id=170477 seems there own un installer doesn't un install properly and there new package released days ago can't cope.

Top this off with an upgrade pack of another 88Mb after install makes me think it's time to look around again.

Talk about shades of the last time I removed Norton from someone's PC for them.

AVG - 10 points tonight.

Still sticking with them currently but other Anti Virus software might be considered next time around.

  • I have and like AVG on the other computer However it slows down the computer a lot So for this current computer I use or at least giving it a go - Microsoft Security Essentials
  • I didn't have an issue bf but I've only done on PC so far. avg has been good to me, and I also use malwarebytes free too. Avg is good in that it scans network drives.  Other free ones don't. I haven't bought a security product for years.  Norton was a total nightmare years back.
  • I too have used AVG since I discovered years ago that Norton was very heavy for my PC's.  I fear that AVG is now equally so, so perhaps I'll get something lighter when my licence expires in January.
  • After trying McAfee, Nortons and Eset/NOD32 over the years, I now use Avira. I did plenty of research on what is considered the best. It was a toss-up between Avira and AVG. The latest version scans for incompatible products, which is often the cause of failed installations that BF referred to I have 3 laptops and use the premium version on two of them and the freebie on my roasting lappie which I generally don't use for browsing the net, just to make I can download updates. I can highly recommend it - very resource friendly.  If you have Win 7, then you only need a good AV as the Windows firewall is more than adequate.
  • I use AVG and still managed to get a virus a while back.....  >:(      But, have since removed, cleanup up + reinstalled AVG, then added zone alarm. Haven't had a problem since.  The upgrade yesterday ran through ok for me.  (but my laptop is pretty damn old & still running XP)
  • Nothing wrong with XP  :) I have done the site upgrade off this 6 year old laptop running xp and the AVG upgrade on it was smooth. I am actually kind of dreading upgrading the laptop too as I will finish up on 7 or similar.
  • Borat, zonealarm is a nightmare!  Always causing conflicts and false alarms.  I ditched it years ago. Avast was good when I tried it, but no network scanning, so it wouldn't scan files on my NAS :( Haven't paid for ANY security or virus software for years.  Plenty of free ones out there ;)  AVG is getting a little bloated of late I have to agree.
  • In the past I have used Norton "hated it" and a nightmare to remove, McAfee, let too much crap through and Zone alarm, like Lacehim says Z/Alarm is more trouble than its worth. I have been running the the full version of AVG for the past 3 or 4 years and have found it to be excellent, 3 machines in the house and not a hint of a problem with any of them. All of my AVG upgrades have run without a problem.

As a method to manage this I use ACRONIS to backup my system as an image on a tight schedule. AND use VM when doing strange  things.
Personally I use DriveXML to image my harddrives.  http://www.runtime.org/driveimage-xml.htm It's free for non commercial use, and the best part is that you can restore from a WinPE boot CD. :)
