After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

  • Folks - just a minor correction....... Wolffy is now the co-agent for Probat roasters in in Australia - primarily the shop and specialty roasters up to say 50kg, whereas Nupac the other co-agent will do the larger systems. Geisen do not have a local agent at the moment, however, I have company contacts if you PM me.

  • So I'm not really in the market, and I don't want to hassle resellers seeing as there is a slim chance of me buying, but does anyone have rough pricing on the smaller ones, specifically the Discaf TN 0.6kg??? Maybe PM me if they don't want to put them in public.
  • Depending on the type of roaster and size, the actual purchase price of a roaster can be typically about 60 - 70% of the overall cost when you factor in the flue, extraction units, power and gas mods and of course the certification if it's a gas appliance deemed Type B. Unfortunately, VIC has the highest certification cost for compliance with Energy Safe.........you can easily burn some big $$.....up to $15K in achieving compliance.

  • An Akaneks 1kg will set you back around $5 to 6K all up (which includes shipping, duties, GST, handling, various fees, freight forwarding within Australia and electrical compliancing and installation [20amp circuit, cord, plug, outlet]) The Akankes 2.5kg would raise the figure by another $4 to 5K
  • BF - I'm 99% sure you'll have the same compliance requirements for either gas. I don't think ESV differentiate.

    You could do that too but I like my drum Roasters  :) I had thought about putting other roaster types like the fluid beds etc in here but left it just drum. Do you know off hand if that just applies to Natural gas or does it apply to bottle gas as well? Electric is looking good.
    Timbo - As Ewan noted, the ESV requirements (or I should say principles) will be similar for both fuel types, however, with LPG there are likely to be a few extra steps around fuel storage being a certain distance from the appliance, potentially outdoor location, etc. If anyone is in the market for a a gas-fired roaster, then try to confirm whether it is deemed Type A or B early in your research - in fact, this should perhaps be a more important criteria than your perceived view of whether brand X is better than brand Y. The logic here is that a Type B might look good in terms of specs and reviews from overseas, but by the time you have to replace some items, it may not work 100% the same as the original designer intended. Type A is like your typical BBQ, etc. and will normally have an AGA code - this makes life a whole lot easier. I'm not 100% certain, but Mark generally does most of the work on the HG's to get them right before he ships them to the end-customer. For Type B, you then need to find a Type B gasfitter (there are not many of them around, or if they are, they are way too busy on large furnaces and big companies and will be impossible to get an appointment). In order to achieve compliance, it will be necessary for the gasfitter and an electrician to go through all the fuel and electrical schematics (if available) to understand the controls. It could be necessary to replace the fitted burner with an AGA approved model (not particularly expensive) but it will be the way in which airflow, pilots, purge sweeps and other safety methods operate that will determine what needs to be done to the roaster to bring it up to compliance. Most roaster builders will not publish the internal specs of their system for fear of their designs being copied - that's fair enough. But the paradox is that these sort of details are required to make the roaster compliant. Don't be surprised if you waste 6+ weeks on the back & forth and overall certification timelines can take up to 9 months - which is fine because ESV will let you have up to 12 months commissioning supply. Fire suppressant technology may be required in the drum, cyclone or flue area, as will extra manual over-temp sensors. This really comes down to a risk assessment and size of equipment. The reason ES Vic are more difficult to achieve compliance is because they do not trust PLC technology, deferring to 30 year old systems for safety control. Installing check/proving switches in duplicate can seem frustrating when all you want to do is roast. Of course, once all the mods are done, it then needs to be tested with ESV inspections using special equipment to measure items such as airflow in various parts of the roaster, emissions in the flue, pressure, etc. There is a move in some areas of Australia to allow Type B self-regulation by some approved license holders - this involves the experienced (and trusted) combustion expert being able to make all the mods, perform the testing, submit the results and then hopefully achieve certification with less involvement from the local state Energy Safe. There are some roasters running around Victoria that are not certified and that's purely a decision those owners make. Jeff

Personally, I would not go with a cheap equipment option as the effort and cost to get a unit up and running is about 10x the plant and equipment acquisition price. Now Timbo, I still need to keep working on you to convince you gas is way superior to electric...........

    Not sure where the "...10x the plant and equipment acquisition price" figure came from since my version of reality (importing an affordable electric roaster and then modifying it to 2kg batch size) shows that the all-up costs have been amazingly reasonable... more like 1.5 x the plant & equipment cost Having said that... if I had to do it all over again I definitely would have started off with a larger capacity machine... 5kg would have been nice As for the electric vs gas performance issue I have found that an electric machine with good airflow control is almost as responsive as a gas roaster... when manipulating the airflow of my roaster I can see a temperature differential within seconds and have never had a problem keeping a roast on profile... even with 2kg batches The bottom line is that if you're going full-on commerical go big and go gas If you're a serious hobbyist wishing to test the waters of commercial viability then electric is the most cost effective, and far easier, way to go

    While I am 'retired' I seem to have got a little sidetracked into most likely doing a deal on a cheap and cheerful Chinese 1kg electric roaster  ??? 3.5kw slotted s/steel drum basically a jumbo hottop. Until I get a permanent location and the gas/electric thing sorted I have temporarily decided on a 'cheap' 1kg plaything  :-| Shop plan is still a 3kg but the electric/lpg/natural thing can't yet be resolved.

    I was kind of guessing there might be a potential buyer or two out there :) Interesting I was looking at the specks of the 2kg Solar at 3.2kW and the one I am looking at is 3.5kW for a nominal 1kg so I guess it might stand a little more i the drum depending on physical size.
    With a bit more insulation, who knows. Even the small machines like the Behmor aren't running flat out all the time - batch size is limited by predifined temp profile curves. I'd love to see a Behmore with just two switches for the 800W elements for manual control and then see what it can do. I know you can do 600g+ in the cage itself. 3.2kW at high efficiency should handle 4kg or so assuming adequate airflow and drum size.
  • At 3.5kW, it will more than likely roast very quickly, beware of overshooting. I've found a way to do fast batches in my Solar, but it involves a 250C drop temp, and about 1.5kg batch size.  Otherwise it does a 13-14 minute roast for filter, way too slow for my liking.
