I was content with my SB EM0480 while I had it - I hadn't used any other grinder. Upgrading from the SB EM0480 to the Breville Smart Grinder was like a dream for me. It is faster, quieter, cleaner, grinds finer and the result in the cup made the purchase a no-brainer, I only wish I had done it sooner. I reckon the Smart Grinder is superb value for money.

I have a SJ Electronic on order and am curious how much more of a difference I will notice. Anyone have both that could shed some light? Any SJ users that can tell me how fast it will grind? Anyone tried the Duranium burrs?

I haven't owned the Super Jolly but have owned the Major before I upgraded the the BNZ Both grinders are beast's and would recommend the SJ based on my experience with the Major KK

Nope nope nope and... Nope... but can't wait to see pics and hear our take on things! When AM and I dialed the smart grinder in really fine although not fine enough to choke the machine the pitch of the motor dropped asvthough it was under duress. I've never experienced this sort of noise with the Lux (although the bloody thing is so loud you'd hardly know if the pitch dropped: perhaps our teeth would just break and fall out more slowly). Is this motor sounding under duress at finer grinds our experience or is it just the unit we played with? Huge congratulations on the upgrade!!!

I've got a SJ (not electric) for home use and it makes spectacularly fine coffee and is well paired to my Rancillio S27 - my only complaint is that the dosing chamber 'throws to the left' and you end up with quite a bit of grind on the bench - a problem which ought to be cured by the electronic version congrats on the purchase! P

I'm hoping it will be a bit quieter and a fairbit faster than the Smart grinder which currently takes about 25-30 seconds per double

The standard version is fine for home as it can be modded easily to resolve the two minor issues, but when dosing on demand in a cafe situation, it wouldn't be the best option. I like the industrialness of the SJ which is why I've got one, but he Super Jolly Electronic would be better in almost all situations if you can justify the extra expense.

Nice mods KK! I compensate for the messy dosing by either: A) dosing really quickly directly to the basket to mnimise the amount of grinds sweeping through each time, and or

leave the grinder running and count to approx ten seconds, then switch off and dose - which gives me enough coffee grinds for a double basket Still.. Wouldn't mind an electric but!

Well I think I managed to dial in/season myself with the SJe now. I haven't weighed whats going in or out as I am using a scoop to load the beans into the hopper. On to setting the dose, I'm using the double button and then editing it's programmed time after each shot. I want to get it to the point where it finishes grinding the beans but keeps going for about another second after that so there's nothing left behind to go stale. I think I'll measure in and out on the next one and see how much I am losing. I gott this grinder assuming the quality of the grind would improve (from Smart Grinder), knowing it would be big and hoping it would be faster, quieter, and cleaner - the timed dosing would just be a bonus that I could play with. Now that I have had a good play with it I am happy with it's speed and if it get's even faster I won't complain. I'm not sure how loud some grinders are but this sounds tolerable for my in-home use. I have an open kitchen with the loungeroom adjoing and I can now hear the wife talk and the TV with the grinder running... I had to raise my hand to signal to her that I couldn't hear everytime I used the Smart Grinder. The extra speed offsets the noise the SJe puts out anyway. I am wondering if it will get any quieter with a smaller hopper or with no hopper at all - I'll have to try. Is the SJe clean as expected? NO. The speed at which it throws the grinds in to the PF mean some can end up on the counter - 10-15% or thereabouts. I've tried two ways to combat it. First, I ran the grinder over two doses with a light tap on the bench in between to settle the grounds. This improved but didn't cure the situation and I want to use the PF holder and use the time grinding to get milk from the fridge - multi-tasking at it's best! Second, I ate a Creme Caramel (yum), cleaned the tub and sliced the bottom off to make a funnel. Problem solved but it looks crap having a white plastic tub sitting on the bench next to this grinder. I'm looking around for a better solution. As to the quality of the grind, well I'm far from an expert and I'm learning a new machine at the same time and using VST baskets just to make things even trickier but I think the grind quality is good. It does clump a bit but less than the Smart Grinder did and overall the result is much fluffier and appears very uniform in size. I fired up the EM6910 again and pulled two shots to compare the Smart Grinder and the Super Jolly and then did it with the BDB too and the winner is clear. Not saying the SMart Grinder isn't exceptional value for money - I believe it is. But I'm glad I took the jump :D

Thanks for the link Gra, I had been eyeing those off but wasn't sure if they had enough height on them to catch all the grinds as they exited the chute of the SJ so please let me know how it works out for you.

I've been using one for about 12 months Muscles and wouldn't be without it, fits the portafilter nicely and saves a lot of mess. They are quite expensive for what they are, others have done similar things with cut down yoghurt containers etc, the funnels from Orphan are well made and come on a range of powder coated colours. ;D

Thanks DB for confirming they are worthwhile, I bit the bullet and bought one of each type. I was having trouble justifying the $32.50 for the larger one but if it completes my espresso picture for an extra 1.6% outlay then so be it. I'll try them both out and see how the results are.

Hi Guys, has anybody changed a set of SJ burrs? Anything I need to be weary of? Can someone give me a rough idea of how long it should take? I have an hour or so in the morning where the wife will be out and want to finish before she returns or it will be... :pan

Its not hard 3 counter sunk screws on each burr I suggest a clean/vacuum of all grounds before starting So you need to unscrew the top burr carrier (clockwise) Wash it under the tap and leave to dry Vacuum and brush the bottom burr and grinder throat For both top and bottom burrs Use a large & well fitting screwdriver Unscrew the 3 countersunk screws on each burr Important - Before fitting new burrs Clean again as you will see coffee gunk under the burr ( and wonder how the hell it got there) KK

Also, the collar might not line up the same way as you are used to when finished, so mark it somehow if you want it to line up exactly again.

If I can add one point KK, make sure you use a screw driver of the correct size with a clean sharp undamaged tip.

I got one of those funnels too from OE. got it off sniff (fellow lusso owner). They are pretty useful. Re changing your burrs, is there a reason for it? You might just need them cleaned. When I used to do my rocky/K6 burrs I could use a socket to stop the burr carrier moving, or put a bit of dowel up the spout to stop it moving. Otherwise it was quite hard to get a good bit of torque on the screw without stuffing it! I totally agree with DB re using the right screw head. If you stuff the screws you are in for soem fun times!

Take it easy, and give it a good clean while your are in there.

Thank you all for your advice. I will go slow and will hopefully have time to take some pics along the way. The stock burrs have only 1250 doses on the clock so probably not even run in yet but I must satisfy my curiosity and see if the Dura-Mill burrs are in fact faster...

Knocked this over this morning without a hitch and to my surprise it only took me four attempts to dial the new burrs in to an acceptable grind. I did manage to take some photos but the wife had put pressure on the get it finished so didn't get as many as I would have liked. The orig. burrs had 1264 doses on when pulled so lots of life left in them as expected. I'll get pics off the camera and add them in here a bit later on when time permits. Thanks again for the advice...

Actually, the bigger surprise was how much stays in the shoot, about 3g. I purposefully left the finger guard out when putting it all back together.

I wanted to get some better photos of both the old and new burrs but had to make do with the P&S... Already I can see less clumping using same beans and grind setting (or close enough), now, just waiting to see how the bed in and what the speed is like. Old burrs I had timer set to 13.25 and got 21g's out - will runs some measurements soon for the new ones.

That's quite a build up of old beans and grounds in the bottom burr area Muscles, my Mazzer mini is 18 months old, have cleaned it twice and have never experienced that sort of build up, I don't fill my hopper, dose 18 grams per shot and brush out the burr area and chute each and every shot, keeps things pretty clean and tidy.

Hopefully just a case of overblown white balance in the photo. Some of the beans look very yellow as a reference. I may be wrong and the SJ may lead a double life as a very expensive and very temporary spice grinder... :P

Baby poo mustard :rofl: Yeah I think the WB was a bit off. Using macro mode on the P&S camera enables an LED to get more light up close, really helps with the focus (pics resized but not cropped) but can throw off the WB. Considering I have used the grinder since mid August, does that seem like excessive build up? (mind you I did put about 4kg of supermarket beans through it when I first got and was dialling in as I didn't want to waste Jeff's beans that I had on hand. Perhaps I should schedule a monthly deep clean of my grinder. I have only just started using the hopper as I have had heaps of visitors lately and wanted to speed up the degassing. With the hopper loaded I was grinding about 4g to clear old grinds, then grinding my dose - think I'll go back to my old ways of putting in only what I want out.

AM, from HB and CG forums my understanding of the reported increase in speed was via increased throughput. As you said, the burrs aren't spinning any faster. From the italmill site and with my very limited expertise I could only summise that this suggests the material and/or coating used offers less resistence allowing for a faster throughput of the coffee and increased longevity in the burrs. Pretty good marketing they have.
