After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Decaf success - v2 SO naturally low-caf bean

A little while ago I caused beangreen a little bit of grief (no fault of theirs, I was just being a PITA) and for reasons that escape me, Brendan threw a little bit of surprise in the box - there was an additional naturally low caf bean thrown into my recent decaf order.

It's an El Savadorian from Los Nogalea Estate, another natural decaf, similar to the Daterra Estate.

This time I decided to try it as an SO - I mean it *looks* like a normal green bean, so why not.

And whaddayaknow, it roasts up like a normal bean too:

It's still too fresh, but I've blended it with my normal day-to-day roast to create a 50/50 morning blend for my wife and it's very smooth so far.

FC at 10mins, pulled at 18.30 during R2C. LOTS of smoke, but an easy bean to roast.

Will update as it matures.

  • Nice roast Kelsey!  You seem to be doing very well with the decaf beans! :)
  • My wife's been loving decaf chillers in this heat!

Hi mate, I can't find any info on this decaf to know that it's low caffeine.  Can you please add some info... I love the idea of another decaf bean.
  • Of course if I read the label beautifully positioned in the photo  :pan
  • :D and now you know everything I do!
  • I just had a ristretto shot of this low caf and was pleasantly surprised by how smooth, rich and choclatey it is. Not particularly vibrant, but easy drinking as espresso and apparently very enjoyable in milk. None of the hard ashy bite of a typical decaf.
  • Is this bean actually decaf? I.e. did it originally contain caffeine that has subsequently been removed? If it is naturally grown and harvested, I would expect it to behave much like any other bean, normal variations assumed. It could not, however, be described as decaf. 'Naturally low in caffeine' would be the normal appellation.
  • Good question UMN!  I would love to know more about this offering.  I'm going to buy some anyway... Kelsey, would you mind drinking say 10 short blacks of this just before bed time and if you can't sleep let us know.
  • Brett, my wife would murder me if I drank her supply of this delicious brew. ;) UNM, I assume you're right, although only Brendan can tell us for a certainty. It was an interesting looking bean in that it was much closer in looks to a normal bean, but still had some dusky hues that makes it look a *little* like a water processed, just not as dark. It says natural decaf on the packet and that's as much as I know at this point. I'd be interested to know how big a difference exists between low caf and decaf.
