After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Any interest in an open source automated pourover coffee maker?

Just wondering if anyone else would be interested in nutting out an open source automated pourover coffee maker made primarily from existing components with minimal customised manufacture.

I am sure some of the work done on the ZPM and arduino/TC4 could be leveraged (they are  also open source) for different brew technology.

There doesn't seem to be a whole lot to it, relative to making an espresso machine. The devil is, as usual, in the detail.

    At this point, undecided. The nice thing about open source is projects can and do change direction. Sometimes only parts of them end up being used, sometimes they become far more than originally intended. I doubt there is much difference in the basics of design (happy to be corrected here) as long as it can be configured/tuned. Initially I would imagine something aimed at the  diy/hacker types, with a potential product if it looks viable. Seems a few people are willing to contribute ideas, so heres what I think is needed  at a minimum. Vessel to contain brewed coffee. Filter holder and filter Vessel to contain water for brewing Means of heating water Means of delivering water to filter Monitoring and control system I suspect using gravity rather than a pump is sensible, although would a pump be helpful for managing flow rate? An arduino and tc4  would seem sensible for monitoring and control. Obviously also a valve system to control flow - any standard items available (aquariums, remote control models,...). Is active heating required? A well insulated vessel for the brewed coffee might allow for an external heat  source and make it suitable for use away from home. If heating, would use two separate elements to allow easy conversion 110 to. 220
  • How about an insulated brewing/filtration bit.  Temperature losses incurred during the brewing process (coffee in contact with water) are significant in the cup, more so than consumption temperature.
