Too cold to roast....

edited January 1970 in Roasting - How To do it
Hi all,

We've just moved into the foothills of Adelaide, and have found since moving that I'm having trouble roasting due to the cold... ( using an I-coffee from jack, till my KKTO arrives  :) )..

I'm wondering if anyone else has this issue, and if so what do you do???  I'm at the point of having to roast in the lounge room.... Bloody cold weather  is there a point temp wise where I may need to pre warm the beans?????

Thanks

  • Keep all available heat inside the roaster for roasting by means of 1] Insulation 2] box the roaster in Or both Then it will roast to its stated capacity KK
  • Thanks KK, I think I've seen some pics of galumays set up, I'll have to try something like that. Cheers wonder
  • In what kind of crazy world do you need insulation against the cold in the NT?!?! (referring to Gulumay)
  • Thanks For the replies guys, it was 5 degrees in the shed, and 10 degrees in the kitchen this morning.  Old houses with poor insulation.    Brrrrrrrrrrr. AM I'll be the one wrapped in the fire insulation blanket, bugger the roaster  ;).. And I think we have some rain coming so that should keep the temp in the teens.. I'll roast then :) ( obviously not in the rain )
  • I must admit my setup is in the shed and its harder for me to find the momentum during winter to either roast in their or to move the whole setup to a warmer part of the house - next house is going to have a dedicated roast department!
  • Even though it's still anywhere between 5-10deg in the shed, I've wrapped the KKTO in a couple of towels, and continued to roast.. 600gms of green <22mins with no pre heating..Comes out just shy of 2nd crack... C9-10.. Will have to get a fire blanket and build my roasting box these days off. Regardless the coffee is tasting great, and I seem to be getting more and more work colleagues wanting beans.. Think I've roasted about 20kgs in the past few weeks.. And I'm only drinking 3-4 espresso/long blacks per day... It's so easy to roast, I seem to roast just for the fun of it....  :stir (going to have to start hiding my green stash in the wood shed.. It's getting big  ??? )
