After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.
Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.
This makes for an interesting read each year apart from the rubbish about $0.35/cup costs at the bottom :pan. Perth may be the dearest surveyed but in my little home town I guess we win due to greed and singe shot rubbish at circa $3.80-$4+.
I guess the results are sound if the same criteria and data collection (etc, etc) is used each year. Saying it costs 35c is very misleading, especially when you do not clarify your accounting methods, and assumptions, let alone the parameters. Just simple marketing to drive home a point. Interesting point about the single shots. I find many establishments serve flat whites and lattes in small cups/glasses (probably less than 200ml) and only use a single shot. The same may apply for a cappuccino, but I notice they will use a double in most cases, especially when the customer asks for a strong one. What I find to be a rip off is when I ask for a double ristretto and get charged extra. Say $3, plus anywhere from 50c to $1 for an extra shot. I watch them make it. I then go back and ask for a ristretto, pay $3 and get served the exact same thing. I suppose transparency and standards vary too much, especially when the person taking orders has no idea what the barista does, or has a lack of knowledge. I believe the Gold coast easily wins a gold medal in the single shot rubbish arena.
I wouldn't have a clue as to the price of coffees these days. If I do go out, I'm often comp'd coffees. Usually in return I'll drop off a bag of beans or some cold drip. Good to see the ancient barter system is still alive and well.
I'd charge $5 a cup if I thought I could get away with it Had a customer complain about the price of our coffee recently @ $3.70 a cup - I told him if he can't afford it he should consider going somewhere else - he said he had and the trouble was that they were all rubbish! Now the same guy is a daily regular so we must be doing something right
what I can't get over is the fact that coffees so often seem more expensive in outlying areas, than the capital cities [especially Sydney or Melbourne]; when we moved to Adelaide three years ago, we were still paying $3 for fantastic coffees [Campos, Toby's, Single Origin, Mecca and all the other top-level Sydney cafes] and $3.50 for absolute crap when we came to Adelaide... I really was gobsmacked! It's got a little better now, with one or two really good cafes having opened recently, but still can't get over that they seemed to charge more for an inferior product. A
Its only relative to the standard of coffee, and its pricing, within the area, between the "cafe's " concerned. Nothing to do with coffee supply of course as most cafes are not owned or managed by their suppliers. Its "regional", so to compare the std of coffee and is price, from one city to the next, doesnt work (for me). Also of course readers shouldnt forget that the price of anything has nothing to do with the cost of raw input. The turnover and profit from things like sales of cups of coffee and plates of food, have to pay for the entire cost of doing the business which means paying all its bills and making an income for the business owner that will keep it in business and not result in its closing the doors.
yup ... interesting case was Perth, which according to a study last year, has the most expensive coffee in Australia [from memory some places charge $4+], although at least there are places there where you can get a good coffee...
In the City yesterday wth my daughter and we went down to Toby's Estate and had two lattes and a short black of the Costa Rica San Pedro CoE #30....$10 neat covered three VERY excellent coffees. There is no way anyone could justify complaining about that. And at my local haunt it is not uncommon to be offered the odd free cup to try a new SO they may have in. YThey will, also hold enough for a couple shots of SO in the grinder (below the visible level) until later in the arvo for people like myself who truly enjoy the finer coffees. Were they to charge (reasonably) more than they do I would not complain as to me the ENTIRE service package they offer is wrapped up in the price.
