After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Hario Pourover Scales and Video

Well Christmas present issues solved for me just need to leave the unsubtle links laying around  :thumb:

Great to see some more dedicated bits of kit going around for pourover brewing. The video is worth a watch to look at the technique if nothing else but the scales particularly in a commercial setting will be a great tool.  :)

looks like a great product but wouldnt you measure the coffee before you grind it up and add it to the pour-over?

  • I have significant doubts over whether we'll see it in Australia for quite a while. I hope i'm wrong because i'll be all over it when they're released, however history with such technology suggests we're in for a wait. Same goes for the electric Buono kettle.
  • On the electric Buono St Ali certainly had them for sale at MICE earlier in the year :) Nice thing about having 2 wholesale sources of Hario gear is I suspect it might speed things along. If the scales are battery driven with a plugpack option at least it makes the 240V thing easier.

In that case, i wonder why it hasn't hit the market proper yet.

I hope you're right because we're seriously behind the rest of the coffee world in this regard. NZ already have a few electric Buonos bobbing up.
  • just curious though - why wouldnt you just pre-measure and weigh your beans before or after grinding instead of going to the added length of weighing your entire setup?
  • that was all we had for 3 weeks when in Brazil It was OK

Theatre. The barista is putting on a show, not just making coffee. For fast, low cost, high quality and high throughput there are many better ways to work, but less visually impressive. Most people don't actually want  (or recognise) a good cup of coffee.
  • Pat, The reason for weighing the entire setup is so you can weigh your water. It's much easier to weigh boiling water than to measure it.
  • I work on volume on both counts: water and beans accurate? no... probably not fast and efficient with a terrific end result ? yep, works for me every time!
  • Whatever works for you I suppose, but I find weight on both counts accurate and repeatable. volume (certainly for grounds) doesn't take in to consideration bean density, humidity in the air, fluffiness of the grounds etc.
  • With pourover so far I have gone with marks on catch vessels so far to set volume to grinds ratio but I can see the merit in these for simple repeatable process in particular in commercial settings as the head Barista or person in charge can lay down a recipe to follow for consistency. Depending on price I am up for one of these or a similar option with built in thermometer for brewing.  :)
  • Saw one of these scales in town today. Didn't have a chance to get a price or pick one up but good to know they've arrived in the country.
  • where do you buy the things to hold the paper?

    you mean paperclips? :)
  • no, the wedge shaped things that the paper sits into.
  • A shop. but to be more helpful - some supermarkets will sell them in a set along with some filter papers ands crap coffee, lots of coffee suppliers stock the melitta, hario, chemex etc. http://www.coffeeparts.com.au/brewers/pourover is one place to look. I only mention that because it was the first one I found ebay also.
  • thanks, I just did not know what they were called.
